Caffeine before the SAT or not?

What's your stance on caffeine? Is it helpful to drink something like Red Bull before an SAT, or is it deleterious to your test-taking ability?

I'm sorta on the fence on whether or not I should use caffeine to keep myself perky.

only if you're used to it

my opinion - no Red Bull but coffee is great. i drank a lot of coffee before my test to wake myself up (me - 2280)

Don't drink coffee before the test, it will only make u restless and agitated when instead u need to stay calm

Haha, I was expecting the diverse answers. I might try a practice test after drinking a high concentration of caffeine or something and see how I do. That's probably the best way to do it.

Caffeine is a diuretic. Frankly, it's not that bad but you might have this burning need to urinate during section5, which admittedly dwindles concentration as you focus on not peeing in the testing room, an act which might be painfully humiliating for some pee-ers.

What I tell al my students: If you regularly drink coffee (or red bull or whatever) in the morning, don't quit the day of the test. If you don't, then don't start! Just eat a light, healthy breakfast with some protein, and make sure you take a drink with electrolytes and a snack with some protein to the test. During the breaks, make sure to get up and stretch and get your blood pumping a bit...that's how your brain gets oxygen.

Yeah they say not to do anything on the day of the test that you wouldn't ordinarily do. For example, if you're accustomed to getting 5-6 hours of sleep, then don't suddenly sleep 10 hours before the test (oddly enough, this can make you feel even more tired). So if you usually have caffeine in the morning, then you should do so on the day of the test.

I dranked coffee on my January test and had to go pee REALLY bad starting like section 7, but the proctor didn't give us any breaks since section 5 so i was like thinking "asdhfk;kjh;kh I really need to go pee, how much longer do i have to hold this" instead of doing the test.

so if you are going to drink some. drink a bit concentrated ones and like RIGHT before the test, not like 1 hour or 30 minutes before. and visit the bathroom at like every 5 minute break, just in case you feel sorry later.

the caffeine is good for me, but the pee wasn't >.< The last few sections probably let my score to right below 2100, since i scored high 2150s on every practice test. i mean its really hard to concentrate on the CR and look for which answer is better for WR when you really needed to go pee.

If I was in an SAT situation and I had to pee really badly, I think I would take the plunge (terrible pun) because I don't care if I embarass myself in front of a bunch of kids I don't know if my future depends on it.

WHat's the effect of RED BULL? isn't red bull same thing as Caffein?

I chugged a thing of bawls(<a href="http://www.bawls.com/%5B/url%5D">http://www.bawls.com/</a>) before the SATII's my sophomore year of HS and got high 700s and an 800, but I also studied. I think the studying helped more. The test ARE boring an monotonous tho, so something to help you stay up isn't a bad idea.

I had 2 monster energies (one before and one during) and got a 2320. It really seemed to keep me from losing focus. I was, however, literally twitching after the second.

I noticed coffee 1.) Makes my eyes hurt, 2.) makes me sleepy after 2 hours, so I wouldnt drink it before a test....I drank it before my SAT II Biology and got a 630 on it....(partially because i hated biology but im sure tiredness had a thing to do with it)

To me a moderate caffine = good, I now drink a diet Pepsi (not diet coke) before a big test along with a energy bar - the soda bubbles keep you awake AND full, because the bubblin feeling in your stomach keeps you awake but doesnt make you feel sick (note: this is from drinking one of those .2 liter bottles, the ones with about 3 servings in it...unhealthy, but the test is important)

An apple will do just as much to keep you perky, without the risk of wetting yourself or twitching!!
