I was thinking about joining the cal band. I play standup and electric bass right now and am gigging alot, but these instruments aren't in a marching band. I was thinking about switching over to some rhythmically simple percussion instrument like bass drum in order to play in the band.

Would this be a realistic hope? Also would it be crazy for me to do this first semester if I also want to rush and get good grades :). Finally, would I be missing out on alot of game day awesomeness if I was in the band?

I can’t really answer your questions (I am also an incoming freshman), but if you check out the university of california marching band website and fill out the interest form a recruiter will email you and you can get the most accurate info for a case like this.

err…if anything you’ll be going to a buttload of games.
cal band great. our grammar bad! haha

of course not, if you are in Cal Band, you are PART OF GAME DAY AWESOMENESS!!! Cal Band Great!

well i know that u cannot be a bass drummer as a first year (seniority rules or something). i am planning on auditioning for Cal Band in the drum section also (as a freshman), but I am going to be trying for snare. maybe you could try for cymbals?

Is it possible to join the band with little/ no experience? I am also in this position, having played piano, but wanting to try out a wind instrument.

Yes, it is totally possible to join the band with absolutely no experience. The fact that you guys know how to read music at all, even if you’re switching instruments, is a plus. My only piece of advice for you guys is that if you decide you want to play a wind instrument, pick a brass one. They have the melody the majority of the time, and it is near impossible for the crowd to hear the woodwinds.

I second what Locke says. I wish in fifth grade when we were picking out instruments my music teacher had said that while the sax looks really cool, you don’t get to play anything interesting unless you’re in jazz band.
