Cal Grant A vs Cal Grant B UC?

Which one is better if you are going to a UC? I keep hearing that Cal Grant B is better , but it doesnt make any sense because you get less money...
Can someone please explain to me how Cal grants work? Do we get to pick which Cal Grant we get?

At a UC, CAL Grant B is better even though it gives less money. :)

It only appears to give less money. You have to look at the whole picture to see that it is actually the best option for UC students and the one that some of the money is more flexible (the living assistance amount can be used for anything and is given directly to the student rather than applied to any bill balance; the tuition/fee assistance is locked up in the qualified expenses area).

Cal Grant A provides:
tuition/fee assistance for four years

Cal Grant B provides:
tuition/fee assistance for three years*
living assistance for four years

*If you qualify for Cal Grant B, you more than likely qualify for Blue&Gold. Blue&Gold is a promise that your systemwide fees will be met through grants (and/or scholarships). This will make up the apparent shortfall in Cal Grant B the freshman year.
