Cal Grant A vs. Cal Grant B

So I will be attending UC Davis and I was checking out the financial aids they are giving me. I know about Cal Grant A but I am clueless about Cal Grant B. Can someone please inform me how Cal Grant B work and why is it better (because i hear a lot of people saying that it is better)

Cal Grant B is straight-up more money than Cal Grant A if you’re attending a CSU. If you’re attending a UC, then Cal Grant A is more money, but . . .

if your UC will “cover the gap” during your freshman year, then Cal Grant B may be a better deal. In other words, if Davis will give you a UC Davis grant that covers the $12,192 that you otherwise would have received under Cal Grant A, then it may be a better deal.

Whether A or B is better for you depends on your individual financial circumstances, and on the grant that UC Davis is willing to give you itself. You need to contact the UC Davis financial aid office and find out exactly how much UC Davis grant money they’ll give you if you opt for Cal Grant B and how much they’ll give you if accept Cal Grant A.

Once you get Davis’s answer, you’ll need to sit down and do the math. Add up what you’d get in total grant money (Cal Grant plus UC Davis grant) with A, and how much you’d get in total grant money with B. Then pick the one that’s better. The financial aid officer at UC Davis should be able to help you to figure this out.

@dodgersmom‌ they offer me Cal Grant A but I am qualify for Cal grant B. I know how much i will get for A but not for B.

This is the aids im getting from davis:

Cal Grant A-confirming elig. $12,192.00
Fed Direct Subsidized Loan $3,000.00
Federal Pell Grant Program $5,730.00
Federal Perkins Loan $2,000.00
University Campus Fee Grant $525.00
University Grant $5,019.00
Total Estimated Financial Aid $28,466.00

On the side note, i heard you dont get any money for B for freshman year but after that, it gives you more money than A, is that true? if the freshman year part is true, then my parents will not be able to afford covering up the 12k that A is offering me for the first year

@igreenk - I meant what I said: you must contact UC Davis financial aid office and ASK them how much they will increase your university grant if you switch from Cal Grant A to Cal Grant B.

Cal Grant A = $12,192 x 4 years.
Cal Grant B = $12,192 x 3 years, PLUS $1,473 x 4 years.

So, yes, you are missing $12,192 for that first year. But UC Davis will give you an additional grant to help pay that amount . . . I just don’t know how much they will give you. It could be as little as $918, or it could be several thousand dollars. You must ask them - that’s the only way you can know!

@dodgersmom Ohhh i seeee
Thank you so much, that really help answer everything
