Cal Grant A vs State University Grant (SUG)

I'm having a little trouble understanding the amounts for each of them.
I am attending as a transfer student to SFSU Fall 2014

I have accepted my Financial Aid Award and it lists:

Federal Pell Grant: $1195
State University Grant: $5472

I also have Work Study and Loans, but I understand those.

I am most likely going to receive a Cal Grant A (once I list school change on my webgrants4students). I know once I am accepted for my Cal Grant A, I will not get SUG.

My question is, when I receive my Cal Grant A award, will I also get the full $5472 or will I get a lower amount due to my parent's income? If it is the same, are the grants basically the same and it doesn't matter which one I choose?

I also emailed SFSU FA and they told me "Most student receive the full amount of cal grant or none not partial amounts." But I would like to make sure with experiences because I read around that people's Cal Grant A were lower, or maybe I misread it.

I would appreciate the help! I tried emailed webtgrants4students, but they never replied to me. I am planning to call them once the weekend is over, but I am figuring out FA stuff this weekend. Thank you.

I don’t know why they would have put “most” since it’s actually all receive either full Cal Grant or none when it comes to institutions like SF State. It is not based on a sliding scale. Perhaps you misread where some receive a lower amount because of their college choice? Cal Grant covers systemwide fees at CSUs and UCs. It also can be used at qualifying institutions for a set amount, but several of these institutions have lost eligibility for their students to receive full Cal Grant due to failures on the institutions part (student debt far too high). It has nothing to do with the student’s family’s income.

Once Cal Grant is applied, you will get the full amount. You might still get some state university grant as well since both the CSUs and UCs seem to be good about adding funds to help cover the extra fees associated with each individual CSU and UC. Can’t say for sure, of course, but it’s a possibility.

Thank you very much!
Yeah, since the SFSU FA said “most,” I started doubting myself.
