Hello, I was just wondering if financial aid and cal grant are the same or 2 different things?
Are you able to get both or just one. Because my financial aid only gives me about 6000$ and I would have to be taking out some loans around 5,000 every year.
Unless I can also get cal grant, which i think they give you you 9,000$

check some of these links for info about Cal Grant
There is federal aid like Pell grant and loans, and also some state grants in some states.

I think the deadline for 15/16 was March 2. Read the link about a possible appeal.
When did you file your FAFSA? When was the financial aid deadline at your school? If you qualify for full Pell (is that what the $6,000 was), then you want to file FAFSA and do tax returns as soon as possible after January 1 because you might qualify for extra aid (FSEOG grant and Perkins loan) and maybe work-study, but these are first come first served.
See if you can still receive the Calgrant and work this summer. Next year file your FAFSA asap.
You need to call the financial aid office at your school and ask about your options.
Please give more info. Are you a freshman for 2015? Do you have a financial aid letter from the college yet? What does it list? Is this CSU, UC or other California college?
Calgrant is one form of financial aid. Did you make an account for California student aid yet on webgrants2students?
Chico State transfer student, this is what they are offering me. My question is can i get cal grant on top of this or no?
The $2736 per semester is Chico States university grant (which will have to be repaid if you later receive a Cal Grant). http://www.csuchico.edu/fa/typesOfAid/grants/types/sug.shtml
the cal grant will be more though correct if i get approved for it? around 5,000 im guessing?
You are getting 5,472 per year from the university, which is the same as the cal grant amount. If the cal grant comes through, it will replace the university grant, so you get the same amount overall. Use the loan if you have to.
so there is no way im getting more money?
No, you already have the full federal and state aid available for CSU. You can see if your department awards any funds. You can apply for outside scholarships. Are you unable to come up the the funds?

i wasnt trying to pull out any loans, because i will have to go to PA med school after which is 100k… so im trying to live off the 11k, i have 3k saved up so the 11k will cover tuition and room… i would get a job but my schedule is looking pretty hard for next semester.
someone told me financial aid and cal grant were 2 different things, thats why i asked.
“Financial aid” is a general term that means grants, scholarships and loans for any source. That’s all it means.
Cal Grant is a specific “financial aid” grant meant to cover your tuition. So is the university grant. So one or the other is given to cover your tuition so you can attend school. That’s all those grants cover.
The Pell Grant is “financial aid” you can use toward non tuition expense.
There are room rentals as low as 350/month so go find one and save a few thousand. I even see one as low as 268 for your own room share bath.
You can’t study every second. So find a job for a few hours a week. Studies show that working 12 hours a week or so helps students with time management and is beneficial to gpa.
You should have been applying for transfer and other scholarships since last fall. You can still see if any are available. Unless you have been working on outside scholarships you will have to use your loans. You can work for one year and pay it off after you graduate and before you enter grad school.
@BrownParent does this reduce OP’s university grant because it is a state school, or do CalGrants reduce university grants everywhere? Also, does the CalGrant reduce the uni grant even if there is still unmet need even with loans?
CSU system and the grants that go with it either university grant or cal grant) usually only cover tuition. In this case the OP really doesn’t have unmet need because his Pell and Student Loan and student earnings expectation will get him through school. That level of self help is expected. The UCs give a bit more but they also expect you to take some loans.
^^I should have mentioned that cal grant B does have an extra allocation over tuition.
Oh ok. Thanks for the info @BrownParent!
ok so how do i accept my cal grant B because its giving me more money
Suggest you look to the website you are on for help or instructions or call the contact phone number. (since it say awarded, you may just have to wait for your college to get the info and adjust their page, but I am not sure.)
