Cal Grant based on Adjusted Gross or Gross?

I have a question. Is the Cal Grant eligibility based on the "Adjusted Gross" income (Line 37) of the tax form? Based on total income (line 22) we just are over the ceiling for our family size. However, if it is based on the "Adjusted Gross" (line 37) then we would be below the ceiling and I would qualify for the Cal Grant. Can someone familiar with the Cal Grant policies let me know which number they use? The adjustment that would bring us below the ceiling would be Liine 34 - Tuitio and fees deduction. Can someone help me out here? Or do I need to call the Cal Grant people? THANKS so much for your help. I do know that if we take the Line 34 Tuition and fees deduction we can't also take the Hope or Lifetime deduction in the same year. THANKS.

Can any of the financial aid folks let me know on this? Just looking to be sure that Cal Grants are based on the “Adjusted Gross” and that it would be after the $4,000 tuition credit was deducted per the tax forms. THANKS for any help.

Hi – just looking to see if anyone has an answer on this. THANKS!!!

I’m sure that thumper or swimcatsmom can answer this.

I suggest that you apply and find out.

Since the Cal Grant income determination is based on FAFSA, and since the income reported on FAFSA is adjusted gross income, I think you can deduce that the Cal Grants will use your adjusted gross income. I looked around the Cal Grant site and couldn’t find anything more specific.

Sorry, I’m no help. I do not live in California. I have very little info about the Cal grants. I would imagine, however, that there is a help line somewhere to get info.

But agreed…if the form says to take a number off of your tax return from a certain LINE…that is the amount you use. If it says…put what is on line 37 in this spot…put what is on line 37 in the spot!
