Cal Grant Competitive

The Blue&Gold is a program through the UC system, which will take into account all the financial needs of the student and will award the student money that will cover the total students tuition and fees…this money can be in the form of a CAL GRANT, other grants or scholarships…

so on my UCR financial aid page it says “cal grant estimated” and estimates the award i will get from cal grant which is around ~$11,000 (I forgot exactly how much)
and then it says “ucr gold grant” which I’m assuming is the blue and gold plan money, and thats about $3,000

On my UCM financial aid it doesn’t estimate how much I will get in Cal Grants. It does however, give me my UCM (blue and gold plan) grant which is about $9,000

Well my question is:
Since UCM didn’t give me an estimated cal grant, does that mean once I do receive it, the UCM grant will be lowered? Why is there such a large difference between UCR’s grant and UCM’s? If UCM is willing to give me $9,000 plus cal grant… I would deff go there.

it does not seem logical to me that you would get all of both grants at UCM because those grants/programs are codependent, but you can use your own judgement on that one. or just call the financial aid office and ask them, if you are pressed for an answer. good luck. i hope you can attend your first choice.

basically both school do their FA package differently, but if you qualify for BLUE and GOLD…you will get minimum of at least the 13,000 in scholarships and grants to cover the UC tuition and fees…the method the individual UC gives you that money varies…

such as…
maybe UCM will give you 11K in CAL Grant Plus 2K in scholarships

where as UCR would give you maybe 5K in Cal Grant, 3k in scholarship and 3k from other factors that would cover the total tuition and fees…

you will qualify for these plus any other forms of financial aid…such as federal loans, parent loans, institution scholarships, etc…

But I do know UCM does give decent amount of financial aid

Are transfer students eligible for Cal Grant B?

I heard that Cal Grant B was specifically for housing, but on my financial aid awards posted from UCM, UCR, and UCSC They don’t mention Cal Grant B. They only give me an estimated amount for Cal Grant A.

^^^^ @uchappytrain

No Cal Grant is specifically for a certain cost…they are basically for the cost of your education…Sometimes people dont qualify for Cal Grant A…or vice versa…Cal Grants are universal and not really set my the school, but its more based on california, on which and what Cal Grant you will get…obviously the school has some input in the amount of cal grant you get, because tuitions at each UC is varied…but generally your cal grants should be around the same amount…I qualify for Cal Grant A, but I dont get an Cal Grant B…This is also because Cal Grant B is for lower income families…

Can you possibly provide us with what your financial aid awards look like from each school?

wait, so I can’t get both cal grant A and B? I can only get one or the other?

^^ My fin aid for UCSC

Could someone please help me out with financial aid? I’m somewhat at a loss. It says that my aid award is 29,867, which covers the amount of tuition, but only about 16k is actually aid and the rest are loans. Here is my unofficial breakdown for UCSB:

Unofficial Grants and Scholarships: $16005
Possible Cal Grant Eligibility: $12924
Federal Pell Grant: $1000
University of California Grant: $2081
Unofficial Work-Study Eligibility: $2000
Unofficial Loan Eligibility: $11862
Recommended Subsidized Direct Stafford Loan: $5500
Recommended Unsubsidized Direct Stafford Loan: $2000
PLUS Loan Eligibility: $4362
Unofficial Total Aid: $29867

Total UCSB Cost Estimate: $29867
Minus Unofficial Grants and Scholarships: $16005
Equals Unofficial Net Cost: $13862

My EFC is $4562 – what would someone recommend that I do? I have 4 siblings, only 1 of my parents is working, and we’re barely scraping by as they support my grandparents as well, so there are no savings whatsoever. Is there a way to a housing allowance or anything of the sort? Is there a reason why my pell grant is so low? Can I increase my loan amounts? Is there a reason why I’m not eligible for Cal Grant B? My gpa is well above 3.0, so I’m just scrambling to try and figure out how to afford everything on my own. I will be working while at school.

Sorry for all the questions, thank you so much!

Why is UCSB so cheap? Jeez look at uchappytrain getting 6k alone from just UCSC grant. UCR gives about 3000 lol and UCSB gives around 2000

I don’t know, I’m crying at the reality of it all, lol, and trying to find out how I can somehow come up with almost $14k? My father (the sole breadwinner) only makes about 50k a year, so I qualify for Blue&Gold so I’m wondering why my full tuition was not covered and why I still have to come up with $13,862?

did u get accepted anywhere else? how’s your package looking ?

my EFC is 0.

How come they are expecting me to take out loans? My sister went to UCR totally free, even her housing costs were covered. is that bc she went to UCR staight out of high school and im a transfer? I need help paying for housing. I thought cal grant B was for housing? why aren’t they giving me enough for housing?

I posted my unofficial award package on the 2nd page, and I’ve only heard back from UCSB so far. I’m waiting on LA, Cal, and SD. I have no idea what to do. :(

cal grant b gives less actually. my efc is 0 too. you should ask her how because I’m really curious as well.

well, can we still get cal grant B even though it doesn’t mention it on our awards as of now? since Our cal grants havn’t even really been processed yet? I dont mind an extra 1000 or so…

^^^ If it’s not too personal, would you happen to know why my EFC is hovering around 4k?

Tl;dr on my post about my financial situation: 4 siblings, only 1 parent works and makes about 50k, also supports my grandparents (but did not list them as dependents), no savings at all.

@ uchappytrain it really depends on your school too. they choose A or B. I always thought they were around the same? Isn’t A harder to get? You need a 3.0 to qualify while you just need a 2.0 for B.

@postsecret my family makes about 13k a year and my EFC is a 0.

you make 50k. my dad is the bread winner too and only makes 18k a year. plus i have a little brother in high school too and my mom is disabled.

you can only get A or B? why cant we get both??
