Hi i was awarded the Cal Grant B which is 1551, but says i qualify for the Cal grant A. Cal grant A is considerably more money and i want to know how to change it to A? The form says they chose the Grant that gave me the most benefit, but I don't understand how making me pay more is beneficial?

I got a form to get my program changed, but it says i must consult with my college financial aid office. Does anyone anything about this?

They did the same for my son $1551 the first year and then it bumped up to $8187 the second year. They give you whatever works out to be the most aid over four years.

Try calling the school first. Schools are generally given a package of money for ALL students receiving Cal Grants at the school, and then divide the amount as they see fit. Your school will probably have someone in the FinAid office specifically assigned to Cal Grants, so ask if you can speak with that person.

Be careful! Cal Grant A and Cal Grant B are payable towards different things over certain years. I am in the same boat as you, and I researched stuff and found that Cal Grant B is actually more beneficial for the later years. Here is what I found out from the UCLA help thread (info is on CSAC website too)

"On my California Aid Report (CAR), it states that I am eligible for both Cal Grant A and B and to contact my school. Can I choose Cal Grant A?

We recommend that you choose Cal Grant B. The first year's Cal Grant B award is for access costs only, expenses for transportation, supplies and books. Beginning with the second year of Cal Grant B benefits, you receive the access costs in addition to the tuition and fees. Over four years, you will receive more from Cal Grant B.

Can I accept Cal Grant A in my first year and switch to Cal Grant B in my second year?

No, once funds are disbursed, you cannot switch your Cal Grant program. "
