I’m currently 27 and will be 28 by the start of the fall quarter. To qualify for Cal Grant, one “must be under 28 by December 2019”… I received an email that my Cal grant was awarded to me by mistake - I don’t qualify.
A couple of the schools I was accepted into had already given me a financial aid award (including the Cal grant) so I guess those will all be removed…
I am still low income. Would the Blue and Gold kick in for me because I don’t qualify for Cal grant or am I only offered loans at this point? I did get 900 Pell Grant, but that honestly won’t help me much… Also UCSB gave a need based scholarship and I’m wondering if that will also be taken away.
Also: Does anyone have an idea as to why there might be an age cap on these financial need grants? The purpose of them is to bring Californians out of poverty and to give low income students a chance at success…I don’t see how age would make a difference.
What Grant they offered? Because Cal Grant B and Cal Grant A have different requirements and a lot of old students - re turning students - receive Cal B.
It showed Cal Grant B was awarded. But in their email, they state that to qualify I must be under 28 by December so that seems to have been why it was rescinded. My GPA is above 3.0, I’m currently a full time student and I am indeed low income working only part time.
As I understand, you received Cal Grant Entitlement which requires that you are under 28 by the end of the awarded year.
Then if your GPA is high and you turn in application (renew every year), you can qualify for Cal Grant Competitive after you are over 28. The only difference between Entitlement and Competitive is that the Competitive is only a limit quantity every year.
So you just have to re-apply (update) and wait until the school-year starts. It is too early now to be sure of Cal Grant Competitive Award.
