Cal Poly - No diversity at all??!!!

My kid who visually stands out as a racial minority is having the time of his life at Cal Poly completely accepted by his peers regardless of ethnicity. By the way, we are also a religious minority with very few students with our background.

To forego Cal Poly because one fears there is not enough diversity is a bit nuts. The only person you will harm is your kid. SLO is a majority white area. So what? The school is actively looking to diversify and we are gladly helping the school out.

I can see marking the school off the list for other reasons. Major not offered, no financial aid package offered, a dislike of clean air and pristine landscapes, etc. But not for racial diversity – and this is coming from a racial and religious minority. We fit in, why wouldn’t you?

If for some reason, you are still bothered by it, send your kid to Cal Poly Pomona. Being near LA, the school is one of the most diverse in the nation. However, Cal Poly SLO is the superior program and from my point of view, the Central Coast is a far nicer place to be than 35 miles West of LA.

I constantly wonder why race is such a big issue on CC? BTW, anyone who has ever suffered from real racism knows that it is a window of a subject best left closed.

If your are uncomfortable don’t go.

We toured last week and while I wasn’t exactly counting minorities, I know I saw a number of Hispanic students, and I remember Asians and African Americans as well. My son commented that the students all seemed very happy.
