My Dd accepted to cal poly Pomona and is interested in animal science with a goal of being a Vet . She has been rejected to UCD and SLO ( top 2 choices) . She’s also been accepted to Oregon state for animal science but torn on paying out of state fees as Ca Residents. She also got in to UCSC and Sonoma Stare for biology and waiting for UCI, UCR, SDSU. Knowing the reputation of UC’s, should she look at going to a UC she can get in for Biology major or stick with CPP as animal science major? Also , feel like she won’t get full college experience at CPP being a commuter school ? Please share your insights . Thanks
What were your D’s Sat scores and gpa? And does she still want to go to Davis for vet school?
The 3 schools that have the most students accepted into the Davis Vet school are UCD, SLO and CPP. If Vet school is her goal, any of these schools will be a good choice. I would give the nod to UCD as a top choice.
Vets can’t really count on making big $ like human doctors, so definitely save money on undergrad to pay for vet school.
@ajwannabe Gpa-3.8 SAT:1320. Yes she would love to go to Davis for Vet School but is more open to exploring other states.
@Gumbymom @CopperlineX2 what does it really mean when I keep hearing that state schools including Cpp are impacted and underfunded ? How does it impact kids getting their classes, having quality teachers , and being able to finish in 4 years?
If she wants to go to Davis for vet school I would also have to recommend CPP. It’s the easiest and most practical way of getting into Davis since Pomona’s program is designed for people who want to go to Davis afterwards. Also, impacted majors means there are more applicants wanting to get in than there is room for. (Example: SLO had around 60,000 applicants this year for animal science but only had room for around 6,000 making the program highly impacted.)
Another good thing about CPP is that she would be close to Western University which is an option in case she doesn’t get into UCD but still wants to stay in state. So few seats for vet school. Can be harder to get admitted than med school!
@fall18mom: CPP has a 4 year Pledge program that guarantees the student will graduate in 4 years if they meet and follow the requirements. Here is the link:

@Gumbymom thank you, this whole process is so stressful and hard on the kids … I feel like it’s only California that’s having all these issues because of the popularity of the schools.
Hi everyone. I found out that last week on friday after hearing I got waitlisted from CPP in mid April for Animal Health Science that now I got accepted. This was my 2nd choice school after UCD rejected me. I am excited that after waiting so long from CPP I finally got in. Here are my stats if anyone is interested:
GPA: 3.814 (this is what it was when I applied)
SAT: 1090
Essay: 17/24
ACT: 19 (I know, it’s not good)
Hope this helps anyone still on the waitlist for this major!
