I've been having a lot of trouble lately as to which college I want to attend. My plan for the future is to apply for the vet school at UC Davis. Until recently, I had my mind set on attending Long Beach for a Zoology degree but am starting to consider going to Cal Poly Pomona instead for a Animal Science degree. Any advice on which school would be better for my major? Here's my list of pro's and con's for attending each school.

LB PRO : better overall school, my major isint as impacted there, id like the environment better, better ranked and has better reviews from the current students

LB CON : my major probably not as well known at that school, the admission statistics for UCD Vet Med School is 0-3 at LB compared to 2-30 at Pomona

Pomona PRO : More hands on, probably better known for the major i want

Pomona CON : i dont like the campus as much, and as i heard that school is only known for engineering and agriculture so there wouldn't be many other choices if I decide to switch majors

CPP is actually ranked a bit higher than CSULB and it is getting better all the time. I feel it is more appropriate to your major. Also, at CPP you will see direct competition between CPP and UCD in areas like intercollegiate rodeo, etc. I’ve seen a rodeo at Cal Poly SLO and CPP was entered in competition. You will not get that at CSULB. Also, CPP has farm animals and horses on campus to work with and study. CSULB has none that I know of.

One CPP student that I know was actually caring for newborn Arabian foals in the campus holding pen. Can’t get that at CSULB. UCD will be a lot more theory, so get your hands on experience at CPP.

I would choose Cal Poly Pomona. I tried getting in there but got rejected. If you have the grades, I would take it as a good opportunity. It’s more highly regarded for it’s academics programs. I only wish I got in there.

I got into long beach with a 950 on my SATs and my friend got in with a score under 900. In fact, the average is about 960. I believe it’s much higher at Pomona.

For animal science, I would definetely choose CPP for it’s hands on opportunities.

Cal Poly Pomona has a much better program in the animal sciences than CSULB does. I wouldn’t categorize Long Beach as a better school, only one that is more popular with out of area applicants.

All I know is, LB has a criminal justice major that’s pretty impacted. The campus is largely commuter. I don’t hear much else one way or another, and I only live slightly more than 1 hour away. CPP also has a reputation of being commuter but they are working to change that and develop a sense of community, and they now require all freshmen outside of a certain geographic area to live in dorms.
