Minority Situation

1) How is the minority situation at Cal Poly? I’ve heard it’s 61% Caucasian, but when I was there it appeared much higher than that.

2) How do others treat minorities there? Are they welcoming toward them or not as much?

3) Are there interracial couples? are people generally open to it?

4) Do people tend to argue about politics alot? I am aware there are many republicans there, but I don’t think it would be that big of a problem for others.

5) are there many parties for people who don’t want to be involved in greek life?

6) How is the security? Can People trust leaving their dorm doors open without having stuff taken?

7) is it true that roommates are assigned by race? is this beneficial or not?

victor12: My 2 daughters attend Cal Poly and they are half Asian/half white, so they are at least partial minorities. I have a limited perspective on all the questions you raise, but here are my responses:

 1. Cal Poly is predominantly white, but not sure of the exact breakdown. Here are some stats from a year ago: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/1351587-diversity-cal-poly-slo.html

2) My daughters have only felt welcomed at Cal Poly.
3) Students are pretty much color-blind about interracial couples.
4) My daughters say Cal Poly tends to be predominantly conservative/Republican, but they tend to avoid getting into arguments about politics/religion.
5) Neither of my daughters is involved with Greek life, and they have found plenty of parties and have a great social life.
6) Neither of my daughters has ever been a victim of crime, but it’s always good to be careful. They lived in Cerro Vista and PCV, and always locked their doors.
7) I believe roommates are assigned by similar interests, not race. My younger daughter was placed with other out-of-state students, and many roommates are grouped together by major.

Hope this helps and good luck to you!

thanks for asking this question, i’ve been wanting to ask this haha

We are an interracial family. Our son is a Junior. So we can speak with authority. COparent is spot on but our experience is slightly different.

1) How is the minority situation at Cal Poly? I’ve heard it’s 61% Caucasian, but when I was there it appeared much higher than that. The school is at least 40% non-white. You will fit in just fine.

2) How do others treat minorities there? Are they welcoming toward them or not as much? You will be welcomed with open arms. No issues at all.

3) Are there interracial couples? are people generally open to it? We are interracial and my son is in an interracial relationship right now. No issues. Nobody has ever looked at any of us twice.

4) Do people tend to argue about politics a lot? I am aware there are many republicans there, but I don’t think it would be that big of a problem for others. My son is apolitical as are most of his friends. He calls himself an “extreme centrist” trusting neither the left or the right. He fits in. I would disagree that Cal Poly is mostly Republican. From our experience the school is extremely neutral and apolitical. In fact, at the height of the “occupy” movement and budget cuts, the school sent out announcements and emails informing students that it was OK to protest and encouraged debate. My son always jokes with pride that everyone ignored the offer because they had better things to do.

5) are there many parties for people who don’t want to be involved in greek life? No problem. You can always find a party. The school has an active greek life, but many, many students are unaffiliated.

6) How is the security? Can People trust leaving their dorm doors open without having stuff taken? My kid has never had anything stolen. People are honest and caring. But use your intelligence. It is a bad idea to leave doors unlocked when you go to class and always lock your bike up no matter what. The school is an open campus so it is possible outsiders can come in and steal stuff, but that is extremely rare. Take normal precautions like you would anywhere. My kid brought camera equipment and certain valuables. So I got him a small safe like the ones you see in hotel rooms at Home Depot for $60. The only complaint I heard was that sometimes a lazy roommate would eat his food rather get off his butt and go shopping for himself. But it always worked out.

7) is it true that roommates are assigned by race? is this beneficial or not? Completely untrue. Never heard this before.

Thanks COparent and OsakaDad! I’m feeling a lot better now.

My previous school was 66% caucasian, so I think Cal Poly won’t be that much different.
