We are debating between Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and U.W. for the civil engineering program. Love the Seattle area but leaning towards Cal Poly for their reputation in engineering and hands on approach to learning. Somewhat worried about California’s financial problems and how it may affect class size and quality of education. Any recommendation or input will be appreciated.

I wouldn’t worry about the financial system. There may be another fee increase, but it wouldn’t hinder your graduation time. Cal Poly has recently really tried to get students graduate on time.

Indeed, Cal Poly is really pushing for kids to graduate on time now. Be sure that your kid is ready, because a lot of kids simply aren’t. It’s a double-edged sword in a sense… yes, it’s great to try and get out in 4 years, but it’s gonna be hard as hell, and it’s overwhelming for a lot.

If you really, really love the Seattle area, I think it may be tough to leave and head into a new environment too, especially if all you’ve known in your life is just Seattle.

Class size is around 30 per class, although in some bigger, broader GEs like Psychology, you may end up in a big lecture hall ala UC system. Education is good, but there are furlough days.

It’s a tough call. It probably comes down to whether or not you feel like paying the out of state tuition is worth it compared to UofW, as well as how your child will adjust to a new environment.
