UW or Cal Poly SLO

i am a deciding between the two schools and its pretty close. I want to study engineering, or computer science. At Cal Poly i am into the major and can switch within the engineering department relatively easy vs UW i have to apply for the majors. With CS being extremely competitive and (civil) engineering at UW not easy to get into either, i am apprehensive about going there. I LOVED the UW campus and would enjoy going to PAC12 sports games. However, i have friends at Cal Poly and the campus seems a lot more inviting and not quite as overwhelming. the biggest concern i have is getting into the majors engineering major i want, any information on the matter would help.

Sounds like you’ve already decided to go to Cal Poly SLO. Good choice!

Go to Cal Poly – getting into Computer Science at the UW is difficult and one blown quiz can be the difference between getting in or not.

Both are great schools for engineering.

My S was accepted at both schools - but chose Cal Poly and is loving it. Ironically, in the interim we’ve moved to suburban Seattle and he would be considered a resident this fall. At CP, he was accepted into General Engineering, but just switched (quite easily) to Computer Engineering (CPE). And despite the switch, remains about a quarter ahead thanks to AP credits. He’s doing very well and getting classes has not been a problem. We were also concerned regarding getting accepted into a major at U Dub. It seems to create the same amount of angst as getting accepted and enrolled into university in the first place. Cal Poly also gave him a modest “Outreach” (OOS) scholarship which helps and at least indicated their interest in him. U Dub is a great school - and I’ve got two nephews that recently went there (BS/MS in ME and a '13 BS grad in Organic Chem), but it’s a very different vibe - an urban campus that is more commuter than residential student based. I hoping that he may consider U Dub for a masters program - but he seems to be enjoying California and will be likely be looking at grad schools there.
