Stats counts, so you are maxed.
@Gumbymom @VickiSoCal You guys just made my day… Make that my year. Thanks so much everyone for their help. I will still be emailing CSU Apply with my concerns about the problems about informing students about middle school coursework. Thank god I like math classes…
Also if you skim last years MCA results thread by major I think 4629 puts you on solid ground for Comp Sci. Good luck!!
And now we have thousands and thousands of students who were (mostly unwillingly) switched into the Common Core pathway in 8th grade so their math classes don’t look like “Algebra 1” or “Geometry”. They are called “Math 8” so for those of us who are in that boat, make sure you enter those classes. It is very unclear if they will “count” (SLO Admissions said they couldn’t commit to that) but they should be included anyway, in my mind. Does anyone else have any comment on that?

where do the middle school grades go?
[/QUOTE]
My D’s school had us fill out a form to have her middle school math grades added to her HS transcript.
@jonathanb1 I’m so sorry this happened to you sounds like you are a very motivated student and have worked hard. I have found that even with advice from the school counselors it can still be a quite confusing. I’m still not sure where to add community college courses I’ve taken to fulfill my a-g requirements as opposed to adding community college courses taken for extra credit. For example, I took US History at my community college my junior year so I could take additional math at my high school during my junior year. I took also English at my community college my junior year because Cal Poly SLO give extra points for 5 years of English. Unlike the US History course, the English was not to fulfill my a-g requirements. It’s all very confusing.
@VickiSoCal, I’m doing this from recollection only, but I don’t believe 4629 for CS to be “solid.” I found one OOS that got in with a 44xx, but in general when I’ve run into MCAs that low and then followed up with the poster, there was an error in their calculation (didn’t know school was a Hayden for example). Fingers crossed though for the OP.
Well, I wouldn’t bank on any of them as a sure thing.
I did the same thing as Jonathanb1!!
IF, we can have our apps deleted and then start over, is there anything that we might be loosing out on by being some of the first apps that were submitted to SLO under our original apps? I had submitted mine on OCT 2. I know that getting the 250 additional MCA points is important but just double checking if there is there any credence to the rumor that there is some sort of benefit to being in with SLO as early as possible?
Nope. First day or last day, all the same.
OP, what did you put for your second and third choice majors? CS is going to be a tough admit even with the full rigor points. You’re a strong candidate though so even if you don’t get in on CS, you might get an offer with choice #2 or #3. Pop back here and let us know what happens come Feb or March. I’m routing for you too.
Wow. Our problem could not be more similar. I am also an OOS student from Washington State who toured and visited the campus over the summer. I made the same mistake of forgetting to add my Geometry and Algebra 1 courses that I took in middle school on the application because it never asked for them. I am also applying for CS and I am worried that the extra 250 points on my MCA score will affect my chances of getting admitted into Cal Poly. By the way my CP GPA was 4.29 and my SAT score was 1450 (680 R&W, 770 Math). I took 4 math courses in high school including Algebra 2, IB Math SL 1, IB Math SL 2, and Calculus 2. Do you think there is any chance that Cal Poly will allow me to make changes to my application after submission?
What is the likelihood of getting in on second major? I thought Cal Poly didn’t pay attention to second choice?
@ashish766 I have contacted cal poly multiple times and even talked to the admissions director. They told me they don’t make any exceptions for students who accidentally don’t report coursework. I wish you luck but there is almost no chance you can change your application through the Cal poly admissions office. Maybe try contacting CSU Apply.
SLO does consider alternate majors although not heavily advertised but usually it is a less competitive major in another college. For example, if you list 2 Engineering majors as First choice and alternate, most likely you will not get either choice if you do not meet their thresholds. However, if you select an Engineering major as first choice and Physics as an alternate, then you have a chance of getting the alternate if you do not meet the Engineering threshold. I encourage you to list an alternate.
@EYEMGH Am I wrong or doesn’t he get minus 500 points for each semester of a missed minimum required course?. By not including Algebra and Geometry won’t the computer assume he didn’t take those courses or is it sophisticated enough to figure out if he took the higher math he must have taken the lower math? I am very sorry, but I think he will likely still appeal as I have seen others with this issue be turned down even with similar stats.
In general remember if you list a second major without wanting to keep it as a major, you may not be able to transfer into a very impacted major such as engineering, particularly CS. Be sure you are willing to stay in your second choice major as CP is so impacted having grown so rapidly many majors are not accepting any change of major requests. Be sure to look at current policies before trying for a major with the intent of changing once you get there. Additionally some majors will not accept transfers if the student would not have qualified to get into that major when they originally applied.
@czs1994 - I just called them and they confirmed that the system is automated, so it only counts what is listed. When they verify things later on, the humans know that taking Algebra 2 as a freshman means you took Algebra and Geometry in middle school, but for the actual admissions decision, if it is not on the app, it doesn’t count.
The counselor I spoke to said that because our son didn’t list Algebra as a course he took, he would miss out on the 250 MCA points, bringing him to a 4719 instead of a 4969. Very disappointing, but there is nothing we can do now. They were adamant they do not allow changes to reported courses after the app has been submitted.
@czs1994, I thought the system would automatically spit out a rejection for not meeting the minimum requirements, but I was wrong. Apparently, as several have posted, it just results in missed rigor “bonus” points.

Mathematics
A grade of “C” or higher in Algebra II validates Algebra I. A grade of “C” or higher in the second semester of a yearlong course will validate a “D” or “F” in the first semester. A grade of “C” or higher in a higher-level math course (i.e., trigonometry or pre-calculus) validates the entire high school college preparatory requirement. Successful completion of a statistics course will validate Algebra I and Algebra II, but will not validate Geometry. Integrated mathematics courses may also validate prior coursework. For more information, see the FAQ provided on the UC “a-g” list.
I assume that’s why leaving off the middle school math doesn’t automatically disqualify you.
@eyemgh @mellog If not meeting a requirement automatically disqualifies you why do they have negative points for missing requirements? It doesn’t make sense. The section Mellog quotes relates to ““D” (or “F”) Grade Validation of Subject Requirements and Electives”. It also says see the FAQ provided on the UC list which specifically states “Beginning with students applying to the University of California for fall 2015 admission, a yearlong Geometry course must be completed or as part of an integrated math course sequence. Higher-level math courses will continue to validate a D or F grade earned in a Geometry course, but will not validate the omission of Geometry from a student’s math course sequence.” For that reason I still suspect not having Geometry and Algebra on your application will result in a minimum of a 1000 point deduction (500 per semester of Geometry) and possibly 2000 if they lose points for missing both algebra and geometry.
