Cal Poly SLO- majors

Is it possible to major to apply for the computer engineering major at cal poly if your not particularly interested in engineering ? This is because I heard its near impossible to switch to an engineering major at slo if accepted and I’m not sure what to major in- at this point, I like math, stats, finance, econ (but I also like physics as well) and I like most subjects  .

I know it will reduce my chances of getting in, but would it be easier, if I do get in, to switch “down” from engineering. I have a 4.0uW, 6 aps, a 1560 sat score (790 math, 770 english) and a 800 sat math 2 and 720 sat physics.

The rule of thumb is that it is easier to switch out of Engineering than switch into Engineering. That said, SLO is not like many CSU’s where you spend the 1st year or 2 taking mainly GE and major pre-req’s. They actually start you on your major classes so if you do end up switching out of Engineering, you may have to take additional classes depending upon which major you switch into later.

Thank you!

Not interested in ANY engineering, or uncertain which engineering?

Choosing Cal Poly without knowing what you want and then planning on figuring it out is not a wise step. Even though it is easier to move “down stream” you will still have to make up required coursework and will likely take more time.

If you’re just not certain about which engineering, choose GE. The system is set up expecting GEs to change engineering majors.
