Cal Poly SLO vs. CSULB

Seeing as my other options are oos, one is a private, that are SUPER WONDERFUL but also super expensive, I'm looking into California schools. Not sure if those expenses are worth it, since my parents just bought a new house and everything :/ I am happy, though, that these are my options. They seem to offer more than a UC would have for me anyway.
Majors I'm interested in are Business, English, maybe Journalism (though CSULB's might be better), and even Psychology/Poli Sci. I do want to go onto a top graduate school later on. Cal Poly may have more name recognition but...? Any compelling arguments for LB? The location sounds AWESOME and a few of my best friends are going.
I do plan on visiting both for Spring Break.

If your major was engineering then Cal Poly would be the obvious choice. Long Beach is a commuter school whereas Cal Poly is not. Choose whichever one is closer to your home. My recommendation is for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Is one better at the aforementioned majors than others?

SLO is far better for engineering and business.
And somewhat better for the other majors.

All right, that makes me feel better. After reading their English page (and seeing where past students went on to), I began to like it a lot more :slight_smile: I was tired of hearing that a CSU would make it difficult to go onto graduate school. Cal Poly SLO is a cut above!

^^I agree. You will love SLO.

The starting salaries for business and engineering grads are pretty high in comparison to other schools’. Would also being part of the liberal arts college be…detrimental? They say SLO graduates earn more than all CSUs and most UCs, but does that not include CLA students?

SLO is not only known for its engineering and business college.

Cal Poly has an undergraduate architecture school that is ranked 5th in the US, an undergraduate agriculture school that is ranked 4th in the US.

We are a pretty decent university. But lots of people didn’t know that.

According to PayScale survey, among public universities, Cal Poly ranked 13th in the nation, and 2nd in West Coast Schools.

@NaniwaJin,
But I’m assuming that reflects graduates from engineering, architecture, agriculture, and business. I’m afraid if I don’t make the switch to business I’ll be stuck with CLA. I’d love to be a part of both.
