I know that prestige matters in many cases such as business (I've heard this a lot from this website). There was a thread comparing csu's business degrees with uc degrees and many people said that a uc degree was far superior. I also have heard from a few people that cal poly's business program is very prestigious. but where does it rank compared to the UC system?

I don’t know. Probably about the same as the mid-tier UC’s, at least judging by admittance stats…

Here’s the stats on admitted students at Cal Poly vs. some other UC’s.

UCR:
Average SAT (math + reading): about 1120
High school GPA: 3.59

UCSB:
Average SAT (m + r): 1247
High school GPA: 4.03

UCI:
Average SAT (m + r): 1244
High school GPA: 4.01

Cal Poly:
Average SAT (m + r): 1276
High school GPA: 3.89

So I reckon the degree has about equal prestige to those UC schools (note: very superficial conclusion!)

Is ucsd around the same as far as admission?

This site isn’t a good indicator about what is important in a college. Prestige whores roam here. In my opinion, there is nothing particularly special about Cal Poly’s business program. SLO is really about its top notch engineering and architecture programs.

SLO is by far the most prestigious CSU with SDSU somewhere behind it (somewhat far away imo). I don’t think you can really compare CSU to UC though because they are very different Universities. As you probably know, CSUs are very focused on undergrad education whereas UCs are known for their very strong graduate education.

Also, this is your third or fourth post about SLO in the UC TRANSFER forum. If you want more help, the SLO forum is your best bet.

thanks for your input Cali Trumpet, and I’ve used this forum as opposed to other ones because of the quality of responses. The feedback seems to be much more informative on this forum

CalPoly is the only CalState campus that has some national recognition. Its prestige is on the level of lower UC campuses (Davis, Merced, Riverside).

I wouldn’t rate Davis as one of the lower UC’s

Cal Poly SLO is better than all business programs in the UCs besides berkeley

^ i agree with lakerforever24

thats good to know. cause its berkley or poly for me

^ well i agreed cuz UCB, UCI, and UCR are the only UCs with bus admin, and poly is better than UCI and UCR. but life wise poly is kinda boring, id prefer a UC to it (well atleast UCB, UCSD, UCD, UCSB).

@niners: did u apply to USC Marshall? u still have time ya know. due feb 1st. USC is definitely better than SLO and arguably better than haas.

really? I think slo is such an awesome town. Actually it holds my favorite surf spot so I’m kinda bias. but you really can’t be SD or SB. I started out at SD and that place is such a good time

I applied but doubt I’d go. I can’t get financial aid and there’s no way I can afford tuition

well to me poly came off as mellow, which is awesome and all ,but after a while itll get to you, whereas the 4 that i listed have mellow aspects, and the have the more active aspects to them as well.

Arguably on the same level as Haas, not arguably better. However, you would be golden at either one. They are both top tier schools. Also, USD has a very good undergrad business school. It is definitely better than SLO and probably in the top 25 in the country. It ranks very high amongst recruiters. Which to me is a key indicator of the quality of a program.

I actually didn’t even apply to davis. I wasn’t a big fan of the area when I went up there. whats the deal with SB? Is their accounting major the other business program they offer?

they’re accounting major is extrememly focused on accouting and economics, whereas business economics is somewhat like business admin in that it involves all aspects of business accounting, econ , marketing, etc etc (it obviosuly wont go as in depth into accounting as their account major). so it kinda all comes down to what u really want to learn, and what ur preparing urself for.

I would suggest looking at:

[Best Schools in California By Salary Potential](http://www.payscale.com/best-colleges/best-schools-in-california.asp)

and businessweek.com’s best undergrad business programs. I don’t think cal poly is on businessweek’s top list and Berkeley is the only UC school on it. I hear cal poly is a big engineering school and their business program is alright. If you want a traditional top notch undergrad business education, but don’t think you can get into haas, go to one of businessweek’s top 50 schools. Other than that, you can also go into an econ/biz econ/mgmt science at a UC. I’m going to do just that.

What about economics at UCs. Or Business Economics at UCLA.

I think the UC community as a whole is a much better deal, regardless of which UC you go to. Especially considering that you can still score great business jobs with Econ majors.

I also heard managerial econ at davis is great and has great recruiting, and is by no means difficult to get in if you can pull your weight.
