Which is better?

Apples are good. Oranges are good. Which is better?

better as in academically

Cal Poly SLO is much better academically (and overall imo). I don’t think these two schools even compare, really.

What is your major?

Also, why don’t you post one thread in the College Search & Selection forum asking for opinions about all the schools you are considering in one thread instead of cluttering the forums with 11+ threads about University of the Pacific vs. (insert other school here). It would also help if you gave more information like cost of attendance, intended major, post-graduation plans, etc.

I don’t think Cal Poly SLO is better academically. Just look at the rankings.

What rankings are you referring to?

Let’s take a look at some of the 2 most popular rankings:

USNews - You can’t really use USNews as a comparison because they are ranked in different categories. Cal Poly SLO is ranked #6 in Regional Universities (West) and UoP is ranked #106 in National Universities.

Forbes - In Forbes’ America’s Best Colleges ranking, Cal Poly SLO is ranked #162 and UoP is ranked #354. Cal Poly SLO is ranked ahead of UoP by a huge margin.

…so I looked at the rankings and it looks like Cal Poly SLO is ranked higher.

Obviously there are major faults when it comes to rankings, but they still provide a basic starting point. There are many other factors which I think show that Cal Poly SLO is stronger academically than UoP, but you pointed to rankings to prove academic quality. It also depends on what major/program you are talking about too.

It looks to me like you are just set on defending UoP. Every single one of your threads is UoP vs. a different school, and when someone says the other school is better you come back and say they are wrong. If you already “know” UoP is so much better why are you even asking? I don’t think you are truly looking to get honest opinions about these schools. Why don’t you respond to any of my other questions (regarding your major, post-grad plans, COA, etc.)?

There is not reason to flood the forums with pointless threads where you are just going to defend UoP. UoP is a fine school. You seem to love it so much, so why are you asking for other people’s opinions? Just go to UoP. I’m not even sure if you are trying to decide on what school to attend… (probably shouldn’t have wasted my time).

■■■■■…

^ Probably…

wow name calling huh? i guess you’re upset someone thinks UOP is better than cal poly slo

contrapositive: there are so many ways to assess which is better, most of them having to do with fit. However, if you’re asking about the academic capability of the students at each, UoP has a 25/75 average CR + M SAT of 1135, and Cal Poly’s is 1220.

DunninLA: I don’t know where you got your information, but the class of 2016 for UOP had an average of 1200 (CR+ M) SAT score.

I agree with DunninLA, there are countless ways to compare schools, but at the end of the day it is the fit. There is no point that one is admitted to Harvard, but the person hates living in Cambridge for whatever reason.

But to settle the back and forth:

Cal Poly avg GPA 3.87, Avg ACT 28, Avg SAT 1268

UOP avg GPA 3.54, Avg ACT 26, Avg SAT 1200

The numbers are from the schools’ sites. So it seems by simplistic raw numbers the answer seems to be self evident.

@contrapositive
If you are already presupposed UOP is better than Cal Poly academically, then why bother asking everyone here, like you did on UCSD,UCSC, UCD, SCU thread?

He’s a ■■■■■. He does this just to waste other’s time, since he apparently has no real use for his.

I’d def go for Cal poly SLO, although I do know that UoP is good for pharmacy.

@OP: I’m actually not upset. I have no connection to either school, and actually I don’t even plan on applying to either school. You are the one who seems to be vehemently justifying UoP. Why? I honestly don’t know, but you are wasting your own time (and mine… so I’m done responding to this thread since you are not honest about your purpose).

You have to be careful about GPA: UOP reports it based on unweighted GPA whilst Cal Poly SLO basis it on weighted GPA

@CollegiateDreams: I am not “vehemently” trying to justify UOP. All I am doing is pressing peoples’ responses. I am never trying to say that they are wrong; all that I am doing is trying to make them go more in-depth. The only way to do this is to press them like I am doing.

the Common Data Set is usually where you can find accurate SAT data for students at Universities (section C9).

Here is the CDS 2011 for UOP… [CDS 2011 First-time, first-year (Freshmen) Admission](http://www.pacific.edu/About-Pacific/AdministrationOffices/Institutional-Research/CDS-2011-General-Information/CDS-2011-First-time-first-year-(Freshmen)-Admission.html) You are correct that I was mistaken… the CDS shows UOP 25/75 CR+M /2 to be 1185.

Here is the CDS 2011 for Cal Poly SLO: http://www.calpoly.edu/~ipa/publications_reports/cds/cds1011update071911.pdf This shows Cal Poly’s 25/75 CR+M /2 to be 1220. Actually not a big difference.
