Cal Poly SLO vs. University of Washington for Business Administration

Hi! So, I'm considering either attending Cal Poly SLO for 4 years for a business administration degree or the University of Washington by going to a CCC for 2 years & transferring for the same degree. I'm not sure which school is better for this degree or would provide the most opportunities? I really would like to have many opportunities so I'm not so afraid about the job market out of college.
I wouldn't go to the University of Washington without transferring because the out-of-state tuition is so high, but 2 years @ UW and 4 years @ Cal Poly factor into about the same price (depending on scholarships, aid, etc. as well as the fact that I won't dorm at UW but I will at Cal Poly for 2 years).
If you contribute to this post, thank you!!

You might want to check into how difficult it is to get into the Foster School as a transfer. I know it isn’t easy as a UW student if you aren’t admitted directly as a freshman applicant.

SLO’s Orfalea College of Business is highly rated. Cost of attendance is approximately 25K per year. I’m a bit confused – you say you will attend SLO for 4 years, but room/board only for two. Will you be living off campus for 2 years? You will still have to pay rent/food expenses elsewhere.

2013 UW cost of attendance is 46K/yr (and even if you don’t live in the dorms you will still have to pay rent/food somewhere, though costs may be less than living in the dorms). <a href=“Costs & Financial Aid | Office of Admissions”>Costs & Financial Aid | Office of Admissions;

Keep in mind there are few scholarships available for out of state students (and probably even less for transfer students). http://expd.washington.edu/scholarships/omsfa/frequently-asked-questions.html</a></p>

Neither will be generous with aid if you don’t qualify.

If you are in-state for California, I would definitely go to Cal Poly SLO. As posted above, their business school is highly rated and you would have many great opportunities along with a better chance for financial aid.

@MLM I would be living off campus for 2 years at SLO and for UW and I know that still will cost me, but that won’t be coming out of my college fund so I’m not counting it as an expense in that sense.

OK, but just as an fyi - my son lives off campus at SLO, so were pretty familiar with the rental costs. He lives in a house near campus which has an attached separate studio. He & his roommate share the studio (but since his friends live in the house, they also have access to the home). His rent is $560/month (which is fair/typical for this type rental in SLO), and their landlord pays all utilities (which is unusual for a house). The only extra expense is his portion of the internet. He gets $400/month for food, but I’m raising it an additional $200 at least temporarily (to put on campus express for lunch on campus http://www.calpolydining.com/campusexpress/</a> . We’ll see how it goes and may adjust it down later on.

There are less expensive apartments/rooms, but most of the rents are in the range of my son’s. Mustang Village apartments are right next to SLO http://www.mustangvillage.com/</a> and a 2br/1ba flat is $419 per person (4 persons per unit, 2 persons sharing each bedroom). http://www.mustangvillage.com/Floor-Plans.aspx</a> Mustang Village rents by the number of bedroom occupants and I believe have 9 month leases (but I’m not positive about that. Many SLO apartments are rented for 9 months instead of 12. I’ve not seen lower rents at SLO (for shared rooms).

UofW means you apply for biz school after two years of general ed. Are you SURE you will have the grades in your first two years? There are several major schools doing that…SMU is another. I believe it is a scam, as few Freshmen will have the grades needed. They hook you for two years, so you will probably finish all four if you do not get into biz school, with a worthless degree. Meanwhile, you get $250K of debt and no job. SMU was especially vague.

Better to get into a biz program as a Freshman, eliminating a major source of stress.

Cal Poly biz school is outstanding. Not easy to get into or though, but you will have a top education from a very well respected school. I would match it up with any west coast undergrad program. And, the tuition is one quarter of University of Santa Clara, a comparable school. My son was accepted to SLO and SCU. There are some benefits in smaller, private colleges, for the individual background and personal style, and not in the quality of education. Both schools were excellent. Just my opinion.
