Cal Poly to Community college how can I make this transition?

I currently took a break from cal poly in second year...missed last spring quarter
I know I should be talking to my counselor about this matter but currently in another country

Anyhow I was thinking of transferring to UC, cause I realized engineering is not my thing
and also my GPA isn't so appealing

So I was thinking of transferring to community college raise my GPA and when everything is right transfer to UC...( time doesn't really matter..as long as i can get into UC )

I am just wondering how I can make this transition

and if anyone has done this tips would be appreciated...

bump,

it’s rather simple. Enroll in your local juco and take any General Ed courses that you have not completed for a liberal arts degree. You’ll also have to decide on a major, bcos when you apply as a transfer, you’ll have to pick a major and have most (if not all) of the prereqs for that major completed. And, you will need high grades in those courses.

However, I would suggest you try to stay at SLO and just change majors, which will likely be easier than going the juco-transfer route. Why UC?

thanks blue for replying
can you explain why staying at SLO is a better idea?

I just thought transferring to UC is a better idea since it has name value ( You can call me stupid but it sucks to be Asian and not go to UC ) therefore I want to try this before its too late and regret for rest of my life…

Secondly Cal Poly has nothing to offer me…my current major is IBM…but whats the point of staying in Cal Poly if I am not interested in Engineer, Architect or Hotel Management? Which they are known for. ( I’ve been digging political science these days )

When I was a highschool kid I really never paid attention to college, yea I was immature and i deeply regret… I simply chose Cal Poly because it was right next to my house <=======Yup at the time I thought this was great, 5 minute drive from my house to school.

Oh one more reason “UC” graduates makes more money teaching English in Korea haha…( which I am planning to do for a year )
thanks guys well I am open for suggestions…

bump filling in 10 words

danny:

I suggested staying at SLO bcos it’s probably easier to transfer to their Arts & Sciences from Engineering (you are already there), than going to a juco and transferring to a UC. SLO is also great in Bio.

But, if you absolutely, positively require a UC degree, go for it. Just know that your chances of transferring to the big three (Cal, LA, & SD) will depend a LOT on your combined college gpa. Yes, upward trend is nice, but it would have to be all A’s at the juco.

thx again blue for your kind reply

Just couple more question ( by the way I really appreciate your replies )

I am little over 1/2 way with my GE’s below 3.0 GPA ( Well in the second year I really begin to excel in my grades )
anyway so I basically don’t have a lot of GE’s left to take which means even if I get all A’s in rest of them I will still not be able to pull a 3.5 gpa…

So this means I will have to take extra GE’s to boost my GPA?? Is this even allowed?

Secondly, community service, I’ve done a truck load of this which became useless when I decided to go to Cal Poly
If I start doing community service once again will it benefit me? so mediocre gpa + community service= at least UCI? ( Not really aiming for high UCs I know its impossible with my current situation, as long as its not UCR or the UC in the bakersfield )

danny:

Besides GEs, you will also need to complete any and all prereqs for the major, for example intro history courses if you are planning on changing into history, or Accounting, Stats and Econ if changing to biz.

From what I know, gpa is pretty huge in transfer apps. May I suggest that you make an appointment with a counselor at your local juco and obtain their advice, since transferring students is one of their big priorities.

I’ll be frank, with "little over 1/2 way with my GE’s below 3.0 GPA " youll have to do a lot more GEs at a community college than you need just to make yourself competitive and balance out the low GPA

At the top UCS majors like Poly Sci are impacted. There’s a website that breaks down transfer admissions by gpa and major. Google UC Stat Finder, before you make any decision to attend a Community College.

Cal Poly is on par with the middle UCs, which is what I predict you could get into. Worst case scenario is you’ll end up at Merced, Riverside, or Santa Cruz, and if that’s okay with you than just simply go to your local community college, and start taking classes. Make sure you bring your Cal Poly transcripts over so that you don’t end up double taking courses you’ve already taken.

i go to UC Santa Cruz. i have only been attending there for one year. I think my second year i am coming back home to do community college to transfer to UCLA. However i am not sure i will have a chance of getting in. I know its alot cheaper because ill be living at home, but i dont want to make a mistake by coming and not being able to get in :frowning: that is why im not so sure what to do ? My mom wants me to stay. Im like whatevers about it, however i feel that i shouldnt come back and go to community college. But then again, i feel that it is more my relationship with my friends that is holding me to santa cruz… Im so confused i dont know what to do ?

your gpa is slackin
