Recently, I talked to my older brother (he graduated already) about my plans for applying for college. Because I am very interested in the idea of majoring in hospitality administration and management, I thought it would be prudent to find a school that had the program or the major. Cal poly Pomona happened to offer it and it seems like they have a pretty strong program. They also have other majors that I would be interested in if I changed my mind. My brother told me that I should go to a UC instead even if they do not have the major and just major in business (which would lead me to the same path?).

My question is... is it better to go to a school well-known for what you want, but not as big of a name or go to a bigger named school that does not have the specific major?

Just curious as to your brother's "knock" against CalPoly. IMO Cal Poly Pomona and San Luis Obispo are excellent schools and are very well respected. They have certain programs that are absolutely first rate and considered as such by those in the particular field. To that end, if CP Pomona has the specific major you want, not sure why would you go elsewhere to take an unrelated/unwanted major.

My personal "bias" is that I think the prestige/name factor is overrated. Personally, I'd go with what you want to study, where you "fit" in. Picking by general "brand name" strikes me as a mistake in most cases and certainly in the situation you describe.

BTW, as far as your bro's alternative plan, of all the UC schools, I believe only Berkeley may have an undergrad business program.

Cal Poly SLO has great engineering - many cali NASA officials graduated from there. These "UC"s aren't always better in every case - unless you get into Berkeley (which is world class) and (perhaps) UCLA

I talked to my career couselor today and he was of the same opinion bullwinkle. I agree and I was a bit unsure until I talked to him. It definitely seems like the way to go especially since I plan to pay for my own tuition. The cost is significantly less and I am going to get what I asked for. I would much rather have the option there than to not have it all.

My choices have narrowed considerably. Woo.

my friend went to cal poly pomona for the hospitality administration major. i think it's great if you're definitely set on that. remember, it's the person who defines success, not the school that he or she went to. you'll be fine at cal poly pomona and you'll certainly break into the field; my friend said they have a good program there. but from my observations, most people who choose to go to schools solely for the specialty major are pretty much set on it.

Thanks for the info you guys. And out of curiosity, what else is cal poly pomona known for? Or is their hospitality administration program what they offer best?

You can say CalPoly is in my family...
My dad went to CP SLO and majored in structural engineering.
my grandmother was a proffesor in CP Pomona,

luceusnoodles-I think CP Pomona is really good in business psychology-or something like that. Or was it regular psychology? Well...anyways, some kind of psychology field is big there, I've heard.
If you got to their site and look under academic departments, you can see that under "College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences", although elsewhere alphabetized, "Psychology and Sociology Department " comes first above A,B,C... Maybe that counts for something?

both cal polys are distinguished in architecture, engineering and agriculture and are very strong as well in business. the pomona campus has the second ranked program in the nation, to cornell of the ivy league, in hospitality management. as i recall, no UC has such a program at all. this decision therefore should be a no brainer.
