Is money a factor? Where are you from? What do you want to do with your degree?

My daughter was down to cal poly, virginia tech and u of oregon last year at just about this time. She chose Cal Poly for its program (learn by doing), weather, town, and friendly campus. She is very happy there. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the program, school, town, etc. We are from out of state.

Money is a factor only in terms of relative value - for example is one school worth $10,000 more per year than another, especially since an advanced degree is my sons goal after finishing a BArch/MArch program. He’s leaning towards Cal Poly “architecture”, but since it’s the most different of the schools, he’s having a hard time getting a feel for what it would be like to go there outside of the architecture program (do students go to the football games, do they participate in intramurals, can they afford to go out in a tourist town, does the city embrace the students - those kind of things). We visited in the summer and our tour guide was delightful, but she portrayed the male students as unattractive, unathletic nerds who had no life outside of the classroom. I think it was meant to be humorous, but it left my son with some doubts. He loved the campus, the beach, the golf courses, the weather, the architecture building, the town…there was a lot he liked.

momomom - Thanks for your offer. I’m new at this, so I’ll have to figure out how to PM you; I have a hectic weekend but I’ll figure it out on Monday. I’d love to hear your impressions of the three schools and to hear about your daughter’s experience at CP.

csfmap,

I have a son at VT (in landscape arch though, not regular arch). I didn’t post earlier, because I am not familiar with the other schools, although I have heard good things about KState. But, if your son is interested in finding a place that has a real good mix of academics and the whole state school undergrad experience, he should look at Virginia Tech.

Blacksburg is the consummate college town and realy embraces the university. My son loves the fun going to the football and basketball games and the academics in arch are highly valued there. (The arch program is consistently ranked in the top 5 nationwide)
VT really offers the whole package. As a parent, I can’t say enough good things about his experience there so far. Very affordable also even for OOS.

Your son has some great options! Best of luck for him in his decision.
