I want to add some information that I left out.

1) I sent my application on March 24, 2008 and shortly after, I received email #1. I never faxed them or emailed them anything.

2) On March 26, 2008, they sent me email #1 again asking me to verify my affiliation with UCB. Again, I took no action.

3) On April 7, 2008, after 2 weeks of no action on my part, I received email #2 and reported it on CC.

Did anyone who received email #2 pay the $20 fee to see the rentals? I wonder if it will make us establish a Calnet ID, or if we would just use the application ID to look at listings.
It is strange that I'm unable to edit my first post, does anyone know why?

Blurry... correct me if i'm wrong, but you applied with your real account yesterday and received both email #1 (thank you for your request..) and email #2 (the approval email) on the same day within a short time frame. And today you created a dummy account and only got email #1?

I used my real account yesterday and got the 1st email today.

I do not have high stats and I think it is highly unlikely I would be accepted to CAL. So let's see if I get the 2nd email.

Note: The OP said it took about 2 weeks to get an email back. Within those two weeks the admissions at Berkeley may have been reviewing his application and then ultimately made an admission decision in April.

I received email #2 (approval email) at around 8:45am this morning, and inquired sometime around 8-9pm last night; though, I have yet to receive the 'automated' email #1.

We should all donate to a paypal account and pay the 20 dollars to see if we can get any further.

I just got the first email. It was about an hour after I signed up.

haha UCB/NYU dreamer, they're probably thinking to themselves, "If we take 20 bucks from all these kids we'll be rich...send them the second email. If they don't get in...oops".

Yesterday at 12:40pm I created an account under my REAL NAME.
By 2pm I received an approval e-mail - no verification e-mail nor an automated "thank you" e-mail.

Yesterday at 8pm I created another account under my room mate's name.
Received an automated message this morning at 8 am
At 9 am I received an e-mail stating "please verify your affliation, etc)

Sounds like Blurry is on to something-- to the point where i'm a little hesitant to try it out of fear that I won't get the approval email. Haha, way to keep an eye out though blurry

So I still haven't received a response from Cal rentals. My message sent April 7 at 2:41PM was:

I was wondering how you were able to prove my affiliation with UC Berkeley. Does everyone who applies to Cal rental eventually get their accounts activated?

And of course I received their automated response immediately:

You think they would give you a response? Course not.

Were you hoping for something like this:

Dear sir,

We verified your account automatically because our systems indicate that you were among the few recently admitted to UC Berkeley. Thank you for your inquiry.

so apparently those who are now getting the second approval email don't even get the first one anymore? I definitely think this means something:

several of us, including myself, have created dummy accounts as a control and have only received email #1.

several of us now who have applied under real account names have received email #2 (the approval one.)

several of us have applied for requests, including myself again, under real accounts and have only received email #1. this indicates that all berkeley applicants, regardless of whether they get in or not, do not receive email #2.

I also don't think the calrentals office assumes we're summer students when their website explicitly states over and over again that they require a separate request to be sent in for summer students. plus why would they assume that some of our authentic account requests were summer applicants and others are not?

I have to agree that the admissions office hasn't gone through all of the applicants yet – I know they must accept the strongest community college transfer's applications first, like changusmc's, and then work their way through the rest. If more of us can keep verifying these results, stated above, then the more likely our hypothesis holds true.

i have yet to receive an e-mail. i dunno, i'm too stressed to think about this now, even though i would much rather ponder the inner workings of UCB than study for this stupid midterm.

if i get a B on this test, that means I have a B in the class. if I get in a B in the class, that means my major GPA and overall GPA will drop. meaning that i will lose my freaking mind.

i'm only taking this class for UCLA, ironically enough...=/

Those who have received the second (approval email), would you mind posting your stats so we can start to understand the trend?

I'll go first:

**Received **second (approval) email
