Holy Moley. Never knew any of that. Well, knew about the hefty taxes part, but not any of the rest of it.
Somehow I seem to remember others doing this when I was younger, and as I have not exactly been “young” in a while…

The California publics “wised up”. No more state-supported funds to OOS.
I am aware of renewable scholarships and one year scholarships, I also have my grandfather’s inheritance of $88,000 that my mom told me is for my education.
Also, at CSU Channel Islands, I am qualified for the Western Undergraduate Exchange program, which gives OOS students 150% of in-state tuition, so I could easily afford that institution.
I chose California because I have family in the area, love the state, and I really need a change in scenery after living in Washington my entire life. Also, my major is history, and most schools have a decent history program.
And the school I am referring to is the University of Washington. My friend has a sister going there right now, and says the yearly cost is about $30,000 if you live on campus. If I can spend a few more thousand dollars a year to be in a location that gives me joy, I don’t see why I wouldn’t move to California to attend a CSU school like San Diego State or Channel Islands. I did apply to the UW since it has good academics and is my parent’s alma mater, but I decided to test the waters by applying to California schools as well.
The tuition itself isn’t $36,000, that’s typically the total cost of attendance price, including room & board as well as predicted expenses. At least that is what my welcome packet from San Diego State University told me.
For the WUE tuition, I will apply for it and see what happens!
I am also planning a college road trip with my California-bound friend as well before I make my college decision in May, so I will check out the CSUCI campus.
I chose the Channel Islands campus because my friend’s aunt has a beach house on the islands and she loves the area. Also, the possibility of WUE tuition tempted both my friend and I into applying. One of us plans on bringing our car to college with us.
I know California isn’t as wonderful as it appears in the movies, but I truly think living there will make me happier. Frankly, anything sounds better than 365 days of dreary, cold, muddy, rainy Washington. I considered moving to California after I graduate, except I plan on attending law school directly afterwards so I wouldn’t be able to live in California for another 4 years on top of the time it takes me to get my undergraduate degree.
The cost of attending the University of Washington (in state) is approximately $30,000 and San Diego State (out of state) costs about $36,000. So either way, my parents are going to pay a lot of money.
I wasn’t going to attempt to gain residency either. I asked my counselor about that a few years ago and she said it wouldn’t work for the same reasons that you outlined.
@anxiousenior1 I know CalState is pretty expensive, but my in-state institutions are as well. The University of Washington costs about $30,000 a year, while San Diego State costs about $36,000 a year. I also did not only apply to California schools. I applied to a few private institutions, but I don’t like the religious aspect of them since I am not particularly religious myself.
$36K combined tuition and housing are the estimated costs per year at our CSU’s. Our fees will be rising soon per the state.
Also, you will need a LOT of money if you plan on going to law school.
Right now, law is not the best occupation. There is a recent class action law suit in San Diego, whereby several law students are suing their law school because the plaintiffs claim that the law school overstated their placement stats.
There are lots of law school graduates with HUGE loan debts and no job prospects. My sister’s huge corporate law office is not hiring unless the person is well known to the firm (in-house referrals only). Check the outlook on the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
So, if you plan on spending all of your inheritance, on an undergrad school. I don’t think that is a wise move, given that you hope to go to law school. There is no “financial aid” for law school. Loans only.

California already has too many lawyers.
But you forgot that UW is a good college and CSUCI is a very ordinary one and a commuter campus etc. You want to pay same or more for a low end college. People don’t usually pick college because someone has a vacation house there and has a good time. Also at UW, if you get in, you can live off campus if you find cheaper housing. Maybe not so easy in Seattle. But your real options are the other WA state schools that cost less. You are literally throwing away money in your plan that you need to save for law school. Or why aren’t you applying for some private schools that may give you enough to match the costs or less? And that would not likely be many CA schools.
Exactly what @BrownParent has indicated.^^^^ Paying all that money for a commuter school, just because its in California, is unwise.
That area has overcast skies and cold water. It’s not sunny all of the time.
