Daughter applying out of state to multiple Cal State campuses. Question on how 8th and 9th grade classes are entered, kind of all related. She’s anxious to submit her apps and I said I would research for her.
ONE. 8th Grade - One year of Foreign Language at middle school 2019-2020, but switched languages so never took second year so she is ignoring this class/grades and not entering it. Is that correct?
TWO. 8th Grade - One year of Algebra at middle school 2019-2020. This out-of-state middle school doesn’t appear in the list of schools for our city, only the local high school does. Change high school attendance dates to 08/19-05/24 to be able to add it? Or add the middle school manually?
THREE. 9th Grade - Six classes at our “Ninth Grade Campus” 2020-2021. (Local high school overcrowded so district built new building only for 9th graders.) This out-of-state high school campus for ninth graders doesn’t appear in the list. It’s kind of part of the “big” high school but is also it’s own school? Daughter confused. Should she “pretend” it is the same school as the high school she will graduate from? Or should she manually enter the school.
List the schools according to the names of the schools that were provided by the district. If they had to hold a separate campus for those ninth graders, then it’s considered an annex and the original school is still listed.
Get the names of the schools from your county district office or your County Office of Education.
Your County District Office is relegated by your State’s Department of Education. They require a record/transcript and someone has to have records that lead to that transcript. Even students who are homeschooled have a transcript as required by their county.
Make sure she qualifies for admission.
She needs at least two years of foreign language in the same language, for a California school. That’s the minimum requirement; most California students have four years in the same language.
Also, ensure that she has taken a year-long course in Visual or Performing Arts for a grade. That’s the F requirement for California public universities.
Also plan to pay full fees for California State University. That’s going to run you about $44,000 a year. The California public universities do not provide aid to non-residents.
Priority, for admissions to the CSUs, goes to local area students and local community college students whose schools have articulation agreements with those area universities.
Thanks, she has two years of a diff foreign language and one year visual arts. No financial aid needed.
Found this in the detailed instructions:
“If you took mathematics or foreign language courses in 7th and 8th grade to fulfill A-G requirements, select the appropriate grade level (e.g. 7th grade, 8th grade). Then, enter your first high school attended in 9th grade and your 9th grade academic year.”
Exactly. The universities want to know where the student matriculated because the record follows the student to the high school.
Please don’t change the attendance dates. Keep everything accurate. The CSU’s receive thousands of applications from OOS and international students. They can usually figure out the records or will contact the schools/district offices when needed.
If she took a different foreign language (for 2 yrs.), then she’s met the minimum requirement for a Language Other Than English (LOTE).
Be aware that the “popular”/competitive CSU’s are difficult for admissions (Cal Poly SLO, SDSU, LB, SJSU) so, the more rigor in coursework would be a plus.
Can I follow up on question 1?
**Should the one year of LOTE (French in this case) in middle school be entered? Guessing yes because the course is on the high school transcript (only math and LOTE middle school classes appear on high school transcript).
**Should it also be manually coded to E/LOTE in the a-g section (all classes must be manually coded because it is out of state student)? There’s also multiple years of different high school LOTE (Spanish) entered/coded.
