The California State University system for the first time in its history is proposing to turn away qualified students due to a worsening state budget crisis.

As part of a plan to slash its 450,000 enrollment by 10,000 students for the 2009-2010 academic year, the 23-campus system, the nation's largest, will push up application deadlines and raise the academic bar for freshmen at its most popular campuses, Chancellor Charles B. Reed said Monday.

The university has never tried this type of enrollment cap, and Cal State officials said they cannot be sure how it will work. While sophomore transfers and out-of-state and international students will be squeezed, California high school graduates probably will bear the brunt of the downsizing, officials said. The university typically admits 45,000 to 50,000 freshmen each year; if even half the reductions land on them, it would mean a 10% drop in first-year admissions.

"These are going to be kids who have done everything they're supposed to do, and told year after year they'll have this opportunity," said Kathy Rapkin, chair of the counseling department at Arcadia High School and past president and Southern California regional representative for the California Assn. of School Counselors. "These kids are not going to get a place."

The other side of this that is concerning is the implementation of geographic limitations. Students will have advantages at their local campus - and restrictions placed on applying out of area. Given that not all programs are equal, this could lead to additional significant issues.

Whew, the HS class of 2009 is facing some big challenges for admissions! Anyone applying should get their applications in now, before anything else changes!

They shouldn't cut their services like this. Instead, they should tighten their belt like any normal company does in tight times by reducing expenses, and raise the tuition for those attending so they can continue to provide them with a decent education. The Cal States are already inexpensive and a raise of a thousand or so a year probably wouldn't be a deal breaker for most of the attendees.

The university typically admits 45,000 to 50,000 freshmen each year.....the Cal State system anticipates $66 million in midyear budget cuts, and further reductions for 2009-2010.....The cost of attending a Cal State college, not including housing, books and other living expenses, is about $3,800 a year.

Yes, the reality of perhaps 10,000 fewer Californians per year getting access to a 4-year university education is very unfortunate for the state.

I received 3 emails from the counseling office of S1's high school today. All said the same thing: apply early, don't wait until the end of the filing period (Nov 30) and for those students who have less competitive GPA/scores, apply to SJSU "just in case".

Unfortunately, S1 has no interest in SJSU, so I can't push him to apply to a school he wouldn't attend.

This is really bad news. I was hoping my D will get into a calpoly or uc. At this point we need to add a csu and cc. I wonder if cc will start to be selecting the students. Anyhow, my D really likes a private college but with this economy, we don't feel comfortable spending that kind of $$ for an undergrad.

MomOfaTeen:
If not already planned, you might want to suggest to your D to apply to all the UCs as opposed to the most popular 3 or 4. That would increase the chances of being admitted to the UC system in the face of more competition for the most popular ones.

I sense a long thanksgiving weekend for many California seniors :( Best of luck to all of you in getting your applications in prior to the 30th. Given the past performance of the UC system (and the expected crush on the CSU system) I sure would suggest submitting well before the last day...

^^I'll second your motion on that, Scualum. Nov 30 happens to be a Sunday this year, so if the computer crashes with lots of last minute applications ....

I can state my DS will NOT be waiting until Nov 30 when he applies next year. If he does, he's on his own or DH can help 'cause that's my birthday.
