Financial crunch hits Cal State; UCs next?

From today's LA Times, a report that funding shortfalls driven largely by the state of California's budget deficit are forcing the California State University (CSU) system to cut enrollment by 10%, forcing the system's most popular campuses for the first time to turn away thousands of applicants who meet CSU's eligibility criteria:

CSU may cut future enrollment by 10,000 - Los Angeles Times

Look for more stories like this in the weeks to come. For public universities, reducing enrollment is often a cost-saving measure. For some private colleges and universities, expanding enrollment---especially by increasing the number of full-pay admits--may be a revenue-enhancing measure.

About 49 state schools are next. From Alaska (oil money down) to Wisconsin. Not sure about Wyoming.

OTOH, such press releases by interested parties also amounts to fear-mongering. 'Hey Governator, look what might happen if you don't raise taxes' so we can continue our lifestyle. And, of course, these woe-is-us pronouncements are driving many excellent students to the privates (note ED apps this year).
