Cal States

Do Cal States have a policy about repeated courses. I got a C in a Class and Retook it and Got a B. Would they take the higher grade?

When you report grades in your application, you report the course with the higher grade and do not mention the prior one (see “Repeated Courses” under “High School Coursework” at this site https://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/admissions/pdf/CalStateApplyFreshman-coursework-entry-guide.pdf) with the result that only the higher grade is used to determine admission.

As @drusba stayed above, you self-report your repeat grade. The school you end matriculating to will see your final transcript so both grades would be on that transcript. Surprised that your HS let you retake a class with an original C grade.

@Gumbymom, at the high school where I teach we have a few students a year who retake classes after receiving a C grade. We are on the 4x4 Block schedule, so there is a lot of extra room for students to take classes. They need 220 semester units for graduation and can take 320 over four years without Summer school or zero period. It’s not automatic, though. They have to petition to do so, but it’s not that hard. D’s and F’s are pretty easy to get a re-take. There is no option for B grades, as far as I know.

@AMCdad: Thank you for the information. I guess every HS has their own policy in regards to retaking classes and D’s/F’s were the only grades that were allowed a repeat for my son’s HS. I know even many colleges have policies against retaking C’s.
