Hi, I am an English major and I can't decided between Cal and UCLA (I've people pulling my arms both ways about it). I do not care about the prestige of Cal nor do I want this to turn into an argument about prestige. I want to know about the English/Humanities departments and how they compare to eachother. i.e. teachers, classes, extracurricular. Your comments/responses would be much appreciated.

They both have similarly good English departments. Do you have a preference right now?

Right now I'm aiming toward UCLA as it is local and I prefer the weather.

Then go. It's that simple.

Unless Cal is offering a much better financial aid package. Then I'd think hard about Cal.

Ok cool thanks!

Doesn't matter. Both are very good schools. Go to the school you like better (in this case, UCLA).

You could try calling the department heads and asking them, or someone they recommend, what differentiates them from the other school. The information you get may help you decide.

Cal's english department is generally considered on a par with H & Y. But, if you like Westwood better, go there.

IMO, I think getting out of your element is part of personal growth, and for that reason alone, suggest you seriously consider going north.

At the undergrad level, the difference between rank 3 and rank 9 is pretty much meaningless.

"Growth" is hard to define, I think. Who says that you have to be out of your element to grow? I mean, I spent a year in a place that was way out of my element, and all I did was become bitter over it...not everyone really responds the same way.
