My advisor told me I received credit and can now choose to take Calc 2. The thing is, I don't feel like I really know calc 1 cause my calc class was also an IB math class, so our teacher split his time teaching IB and AP material so I had to self study the last few weeks to catch up with AP. Im actually really surprised I managed a 5 on the test cause it was honestly the hardest test I've ever taken. But anyways, Im currently registered for Calc 2 (math 116), gen chem (chem 130), and EECS 183 along with UROP, hoping to transfer to engineering (leaning towards biomed, but also considering chemical). Is this schedule considered "difficult" for a freshman? I really don't want to kill my GPA early on, which is why I'm considering retaking Calc 1, even though I do feel confident with the material. But at the same time, I heard calc 2 at michigan is brutal...

Don’t retake a class you already have credit for. Three classes plus UROP research is very manageable. I did the same thing freshman year, and for the first month or so you won’t have a research project yet, so you’ll just have three classes to worry about, which is less than most people.

116 isn’t too bad. I felt like 50% of the material was already covered in AP Calc AB. You should be fine. I had a similar schedule (Math 116 / Chem 210+211 / Engr 101 / UROP) and I had plenty of time for other things.

@xtrade ya I was thinking the same. I took the exam why take the class again.
@attribute was the course load manageable? Even though I’m in chem 140, I’ve heard it’s still a weeder class and don’t wanna ruin my gpa early

Perfectly manageable. Chem130 should be easy, though I have heard Gen Chem lab (Chem 125/126) can be a bit of a pain.

@attribute haha ok idk I guess I’m more scared of how much more difficult these classes will be in comparison to high school…even my advisor said this schedule was a bit tough, but manageable as well

What I have heard is the Calc2 at UMich is pretty much equivalent to AP Calc BC. If you get a 5 in AP Calc AB, there is no reason to retake Calc 1.

@attribute My D will start her freshmen at CoE with Math 215, Chem 210/211, ENGR 100, and WISE. I hope that would be manageable for her too. How was the Chem 210/211 for you?

@billcsho 210 was decent, certainly not as bad as some people make it out to be. I had a crappy “professor” and I didn’t put in the time to study, so I didn’t get the solid A that I wanted. But as long as your daughter puts in the time (I’d say around 3 hours a week, and 8-10 hours during exam week), she should get an A. Getting an A+ is a whole 'nother story… Anyway, the 210 professors for this semester look pretty good. My friends all love Coopola (I had class during his 9am lecture so I couldn’t go), Montgomery is boring but very good (Had him for Chem 215), and Nagorny looks solid based on his RateMyProf reviews. If Labby still teaches it, I’d advise your daughter to avoid her. She’s a post-doc (not even a real professor…) and is just bad at teaching…

211 is nice because it’s led by GSI’s (who are usually lax and helpful) and the average for each section is set at a B+. As long as she sets aside a week to pump out each lab report, she should have no problem beating the average and getting some type of A.

My D has Coppola and it is 8am this year.

@attribute should I start reviewing calc 1 material to prepare for calc 2, considering my calc class was also dedicated to teaching material not relating to calc and I feel a little bit underprepared?
