Does anyone know if we are still allowed to use the TI-89s in the calc classes at duke? someone once told me that you are only allowed to use 83s at college.

Yes, you are.

Keep in mind, the math department generally does not allow the use of any calculator (cell phone, scientific, or graphing) on exams.

You can use anything you want for homework, but like SBR said... no electronics during any math exam.

Most math classes I have been in/TA'd for allow you to use 83 (reccomended) and an 86. 89 may or may not be allowed depending on the class.

Here's the math department's calculator policy page for first years, it is fairly informative:

Calculators

Note that 83/+ is recommended because it is likely that everyone you encounter will know how to use it and thus can provide help.

you guys are incredibly helpful. Thank you :)
