Unless something has changed the Calc placement test is REQUIRED. S got 5 on BC still had to take test.

@bosssr, really? because i called 2 days ago…and the lady just told me to fax her the score report i got from collegeboard in my junior year.

Well, anyway, if you place into Calc 3d you get credit for the first year of calc after you earn a passing grade in Calc 3d.

@kiwilemon: S just completed Soph yr. so that was 2 years ago

IS getting bellow a 35 out of 48 really bad??

The first three sections were completely easy but the next three were quite a b****
And im not that bad at math i got a 770 on math SAT 1 and an 800 on math 2
and i did alright on my math hl ib exams so im kinda worried that my calc placement test score is extremely bad… but im not sure i mean what is a good score?

I am worried about my placement, too. I took the test yesterday and got a 45 out of 48, but I completely failed section 6, only a 6 out of 8. I wasn’t trying hard for that last section at all…
So where am I most likely to be placed into? Any ideas or past experiences will be more than appreciated.
And btw, when and where will I get my placement back? I guess I will need it to register my courses, is that correct?

@ snowy

A 45 will 100% land you in 21259 Calc 3d…the only exception would be if your AP score were a 3 or a 4, then you may possibly long shot be placed in 123, which is a mini course and the second half of calcII (21122).

35-38ish gets you into 122 usually
32-35 borderline and they look at AP scores-- mostly 122 , possilby 121
less than a 32, 121- start with calc 101
gray ara are the 38 - 42 scores…122, 123
42 up usually 259 but can vary depending on where all the points were lost and the AP Score
45 up - pretty much solidly in 259

It’s all “negotiable”…if you’re adamant about 259, you can enroll and if you had a 4 or higher on AP calc bc, then you get credit for 120 and 122 AFTER you successfully complete 259.

If they have your AP score already from jnr year - then you will see your math placement within a week of completing the exam. Check SIO to see if your AP credit is already posted- probably not though…more like Mid July.
If you took calc this year, then you will not see the math placement until they have the AP score…college board releases July 7th in hard copy (and electronic to the schools selected when you took the test) and by phone (for an added fee) on July 1 to the student. In less you are sitting on pins and needles wanting to know, the fee to the college board is an unnecessary expense…and a shameless way for CB to generate even more money !

So sit tight…you cannot register on OLR until the advisor lifts the registration hold and that will not be until the AP score and Math placement are entered.

Most schools register mid July…don’t worry it will be fine.
You can already look at the courses, use scheduleman and be armed and ready to go once your advisor and you have followed all the steps noted in his/her email to you at your CMU email address. By July 1, you will have heard from someone in your college …if not, shoot an email to the freshman contact person and/or just head to FB2014 groups and post an inquiry there or a private message to one of the peer advisors for info. They can point you to the school specific person to find out what to do next if you have not already been receiving information by email.

A 45 is an EXCELLENT SCORE!
You should be thrilled …BTW - how long did it take you to complete the test?

@mom2012and14
Thank you so so much for your detailed answer! That was quite a relieve for me. I am not confident at all about my math skills, you know.
I had my AP calculus in senior year, and took that horribly long test just this past May, so in this case, I guess I will need to wait longer before I can get my placement back, don’t I?
The test took me a bit over two hours, about 15-20min for the first four section and longer for the last two. I guess I kind of benefit from taking the AP test only about a month ago, otherwise the 45 will be a mission impossible for me :P.
Again, thanks a lot for the help!

I spent 6 hours on it…but played video games in between sections…extended the torture.

I did the differentiation and integration first-- aced those…

then got one wrong in the basic aleg section and 1 in functions…stupid mistakes

Not sure about series-- got 3 wrong…

Total a 43…I guess I’m on the iffy number…hope I got a 5 so I don’t have to take calc again.

Are the sections timed? I’ve been putting off my placement test for ages b/c I can never find the time to sit down and take them. I keep putting them off in fear that they are timed.

i think someone said you have 24 hrs for it

Check Blackboard - there are specific instructions for each exam you’ve been requested to take.

Don’t rely on heresay-- check yourself before you start the exam.

You must finish any test you begin in one sitting - don’t log out!
See my previous post and the instuctions.

Oh crap… I didnt take the test in one sitting, will that affect me? I took 2 sections each day…

You need to contact the math department ASAP…send this person an email and cc your advisor.

They download scores daily…and might not have all your parts for the cumulative score.
It’s in the letter and instructions.

questions?
If you have technical problems while taking the calculus placement test, such as being locked out of the test, please contact Christine Gilchrist at or gilchrist@cmu.edu.

what’s the lowest math a mcs student can get into? What score would i need to get into
21-120 Differential Calculus & Integral Calculus? i am really, really bad at math :P

so, I’m in CFA (architecture) and I don’t have to take the calc placement. But if I ever want to transfer/double major(which I’m pretty sure is impossible) should I take it? Just to have my bases covered?
