I am an incoming freshman bio major. I scored very high on the placement test for math and got a 4 on the BC exam this past year. I would like to take 21 B even though I’m a bio major. Is this a bad idea?

I believe it’s always a good thing to know math, but don’t make your life harder by taking rigorous coursing freshmen year!

How is the difficulty level in comparison to 17b?

I registered for 21A; I took Calc AB in high school and got a 5, and I also scored highly on the placement test. But now I’m second-guessing that and also thinking about registering for 21B. Can we just change our schedules during Pass 2, or will we not be allowed to take it if we didn’t take 21A first?

you can switch into 21b during pass 2. i know a guy who did 21c fall quarter freshman year

You can adjust your schedule during pass 2 so that isn’t a problem. Honestly skipping 17a/21a shouldn’t be much of a problem if you excelled in calculus before and stay focused.

I agree with Indianjatt. I took AP Calculus AB in high school back in 2003 and didn’t take another math class for over five years. In 2010 I went straight to Calc II at a CCC and did just fine once I got back into the swing of things. If you got a 4 on the BC exam, you’ve learned more than I did in high school and it’s still fresh. Go for it.
