I’m a senior in high school (NY). I’m thinking about applying to colleges in California.
My GPA is 3.7, I’ve done lots of extracurricular activities and volunteer work. I’m still taking my ACTs.
I’m very interested in pre med or pre dental.
I have some private colleges in mind like University of San Diego, Chapman, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Occidental, Santa Clara, and University of Southern California.
However, I was wondering if you had any other suggestions?
I prefer private colleges. A few colleges here in NY offered a full scholarship, but I prefer not to stay in NY… It doesn’t necessarily have to be in California, so if you have other suggestions please tell me!!
Thank you
How much can you and your family afford? Since your goal is to go to Medical or Dental school, you want to keep your undergrad costs as low as possible. Is your GPA 3.7 unweighted? What are your test scores and EC’s? You want to target private schools that will give you enough FA/merit aid to make them less expensive than any of your in-state options. Have you run the NPC for the colleges on your list? Are they affordable? You would also need to include the high cost of travel in your college cost estimate.
What’s your parents’ budget?
What AP classes have you taken?
Going from NY to CA for a premed is a bad idea because CA has a bad ratio of applicants (too many) to places (too few). UC Riverside is opening a med school with a premed path, but it’s for CA residents (mostly).
Without an ACT score it’s hard to give you suggestions.
Good colleges for science include Trinity, CT; Rhodes, TN; St Olaf, MN; Lawrence, WI…
Do apply to NY colleges. If CA colleges offer a better value/ROI, then drop the NY colleges, but they’re going to be safeties for you and everyone needs safeties.
Pepperdine = conservative, evangelical
Occidental = liberal and vocal
Only one of the two would be a fit.
