Call admissions offices to confirm mail receipt?

Hi I'm an international student in Europe. I sent in my school reports/recs last week and I was wondering whether it is customary for applicants to call the schools to confirm that their sent materials had indeed been received. Or is this annoying/unnecessary?

Also, what happens if I call in December 28th and the school somehow did not receive my materials??

Thanks

Some colleges send confirmation of receipt, many don't. There is nothing wrong with calling to determine, although one week may be a little quick to get an accurate answer because it has to be received and then processed to establish an admissions file. Nevertheless, I probably would not wait until end of December to confirm unless you want to have to scramble to get everything in again by deadline date if it happened to have been lost.
