Call for Echols pool

Hey guys,

Apparently, some people receive phone calls in late Feb. notifying them that they are in the Echols program applicant pool. I know, Dean J, that I should not read too much into this. Still, I'm curious as to how many people who receive the call actually get into the program. I would also like to know if it is extremely rare for someone who hasn't received the call to get into the program. If anyone from past years (or otherwise) knows something about the call to acceptance ratio or has received the call and has/hasn't been accepted, could you please share your knowledge or experience. Thanks folks!

Echols could be more than what it currently is. I see people that deserve to be in Echols but aren’t, and kinda vice-versa. Also, ideally it would be more than just waiver of the graduation requirements and living in the same first-year dorm area.

So if you haven’t received a phone call, can you presume you’re not a candidate?

My younger son did not receive a call or email when others here posted that they got Echols (although his older brother with similar or weaker stats got the invitation along with what appeared to be the bulk of applicants) who were offered Echols. He was disappointed, but what are you going to do? Lots of great students are at UVA without Echols. He received a letter of invitation to Echols by snail mail a couple of weeks later. That was a welcome surprise! There was never any explanation on why he didn’t get an email or any reference to a delay. (I am sure they can’t possibly phone everyone but it would have been nice to get the email along with the bulk of Echols students.) He had already accepted being passed over for that privilege. we will never know…

Calls are made by a group of students called The Virginia Society. They call as many as they can. Like the rest of the student body, they have been on Spring Break for a week.

Please stop fretting about this! If you don’t get into Echols now, you can apply to get into it during your first semester.

I just got an Echols Scholar today, but my friend said not everyone who got calls was ultimately offered a slot in the Echols Program. I’m wondering if there is any merit to what he said, or should I feel safe that I will be an Echols Scholar if I decide to attend UVA?

I just got a call telling me I was a candidate for the Echols program.

Sorry, my excitement led me to poorly phrasing that sentence in my original post.

I got a call, too. I don’t remember what she said about me and Echols, but I think it was about being a candidate.

I regret not asking any question, though, now that I look it up. I felt kinda rude, too.

Does the admission automatically pick some students to be Echols scholars and they become one? I feel weird receiving a call like this when I don’t even know if I have gotten into UVA yet.

Hahahah, I didn’t speak to the person that called me either.

Her: Do you have any questions.
Me: No. I’ve looked it up. I have friends in the program.
Her: Oh…
Me: Thanks for calling, bye!

I think I just wanted to scream with excitement, and the conversation was preventing me from doing so. LOL.

I just got the call an hour or so ago and I was so giddy with excitement that I ended up doing the exact opposite of what you did! I think I actually talked too much! Haha, but the guy that called me seemed really cheery as well so it was quite pleasant to talk to someone happy at that moment. :)

Do you guys know the number on the caller ID?
I got a Virginia Call from a number I don’t know today.
It started with (434) - 996…

Does that match up with yours’?
Or am I being overanxious?

That probably was from UVA.

^Mine just said “Out of Area.” I don’t even know the number.
