Calling all Orange Coast College CCers for Schedule Advice

Hey guys, I'm currently in my first semester at OCC (entered Spring 2011) and I'm aiming to transfer to Berkeley Haas or UCLA BizEcon, applying this November to enter in Fall 2012. I'm one of those guys that likes to map things out ahead of time and I'm putting together a temporary schedule for the upcoming semesters.

Here's my mapped out plan for now:

SPRING 2011

ANTH A110: Comparative Cultures (3.0)
BIOL A125: Human Biology (3.0)

BUS A100H: Honors Intro to Business (3.0)

Total Units: 13.0

SUMMER 2011

ASTR A100H: Honors Intro to Astronomy (3.0)
HIST A185H: Honors Western Civilization II (3.0)

Total Units: 13.0
GRAND TOTAL: 50.0 units

I took Micro and Macro at Irvine Valley College during high school and I spent a semester at NYU, so assuming that at least two NYU courses are UC-transferable, I should have more than 60 units to be eligible to transfer with all my UCLA BizEcon/Haas prerequisites and breadth requirements done.

I would really appreciate it if anyone currently at OCC or previously attended there could offer any advice in terms of which classes to take, which professors to take, which classes I should or shouldn't take in the same semester, etc.

More specific questions:
- Is the extra work in taking an honors course vs. the regular course really worth it, in terms of transfer admissions?
- Is the honors-heavy course load relatively manageable or is it overkill, particularly in the fall semester with 17 units (Lit/Stats/Calc all at the same time)?
- Any suggestions of classes/professors that you liked that I can substitute in, especially if they are "easy As"?

Thanks in advance guys, I look forward to any/all responses!

I’m at GWC and OCC right now.

I’m about to have 36 units by the end of this semester (yay!) and honestly, if you need any help at OCC, I know that the counselors there are VERY helpful.

I’m primarily at GWC because of some discrepancies regarding my admission to the schools I got into last year and the counselors there aren’t that helpful…but seeing as you want to go to a UC, the counselors at OCC will make it their priority to get you the right classes to make a transfer possible.

Haas is highly competitive. I have a friend who transferred to Berkeley after 2 years at OCC with a GPA of 3.9. But it’s doable, so don’t let me discourage you (:

Honors classes do give you an edge. Did you check out the 1-year transfer program? It’s pretty awesome because they give you priority over other students applying with no honors and stuff.

And if you don’t have classes that you need, always consider CCC and GWC–they’re all the same! You only need one parking pass for all 3 schools and it’s great meeting new people from the different campuses. I like GWC because I’m away from the kids I went to high school with, but OCC has better classes in my opinion. GWC is more intimate, also! The classroom sizes are smaller with a higher drop rate (at least with the classes I’m taking).

As for honors specific courses, I highly recommend taking Honors English at GWC (it’s the only honors English course in all 3 institutions) because not only is the teacher really good at what he does, but he always accommodates students if there’s too much work to be done. I got B’s in all of my liberal arts classes that were supposed to be “easy A’s” but an A in his class. It’s enjoyable and it’s almost a guaranteed A if you just do your work and participate (bare minimum).

Thanks for your input, 06122010.

I actually met with an Honors counselor last week and she was very helpful in getting the above plan mapped out. I also joined the Honors program in hopes of getting TAP-certified for UCLA (does this apply for BizEcon majors?), and apparently Berkeley also gives Honors program students priority consideration, informally. Not sure how true that is, but it makes sense.

Any specific class/teacher recommendations?

I don’t have any recommendations at OCC, seeing as I’m only taking French there…if you have questions about GWC, I can give you Sociology 100, History (Western Civ), Accounting, English, the Honors Seminar, Calculus, Business 100, and Philosophy. I took statistics at CCC online because I already took it in high school and didn’t feel the need to actually sit in a classroom to relearn it, haha.

I highly doubt I will be taking any classes at GWC because it’s a bit further from home, and I just don’t have the time when I’m working 35 hours a week… But thank you regardless.

Bump!

Seems like there’s not too many OCC students on here…
Bump.
