very worried about OCC

i've decided on a community college because of financial problems, and i picked occ. i have a few questions about occ
1) are the classes hard at occ? im talking about honors/tap program
2) will i stay longer than 2 years? im almost going to take summer classes. also, can i take the classes i need at a different community college (coastline and goldenwest) or will the classes be full at those too?
3) is it possible to transfer under 2 years with 0 AP credits?
4) is it hard to transfer out to ucla/ucsd/uci/other uc's +?
5) are the honors program and tap program worth taking over normal classes?

please answer.. :(

also…
ive taken 6 ap classes in my high school career, i failed 2 ap tests, taking 3 ap tests this year

Are you talking about Orange Coast College?

1) Use rate my professor. Some Teachers good, some Awful. If you plan out your schedule correctly it’s not too hard to get a 3.9-4.0
2) If you take summer/winter and more than 12 units a semester than No.I would recommend taking classes at other colleges if they fit into your schedule.
3)
4) Which major? Business-Econ/Haas or Engineering are hard. Majors like Greek or French are pretty easy. 40% admit rate at UCB for Humanities Majors
5) In most cases Yes. Most honors classes are only slightly harder than the regular version / completely worth the effort. Exceptions would be MRSC Honors and Math Honors (unless you are a math major)

By plan your schedule I mean when you start you will have low priority and last dibs on the good teachers. So it’s a terrible idea to take an English class your 1st regular semester. You can offset that by taking summer and winter classes which no one wants and using rate my professor to find the good teachers. Afterwards the extra units help build your priority faster. Once you have priority take good teachers where it really counts like English. e.g. It took me over 35 units to get enough priority for the easy calculus teacher.

P.S. if you can sign-up and self study for more AP tests I would highly recommend that.

@bomerr‌ i want to do computer science, also im kind of confused what you put down for #2… im sorry  … also are professors WORTH WAITING THAT LONG? just because it’s easier?

By taking classes in the winter and summer, along with taking more than 12 units in the regular semester you shouldn’t have to stay longer than two years… but for a CS major that is a different story. Are you applying to UCB LA CS or EECS because the later will most likely require 3 years at CC.

Good teachers. If you want to get into UCLA or UCB then yes. Especially for UCLA CS which barely took any transfers last year. .

@bomerr i wanted to do either CS or EECS, but pref CS… so im pretty much screwed because of the competition? also, thank you for the explenation about summer classes (and even winter).

Competition is high in both signing up for the class at CC and when applying for transfer. STEM classes are the most impacted at CC.

Put it like this, If you are capable of getting a 4.0, and you take bad teachers, you might end up with a 3.7 instead. It’s not the end of the world but it does make a noticeable difference if you are shooting for the top.

@bomerr‌ aw poop… ihml… so im guessing the competition is the same for engineering and pre med?

@personstudent

For class selection at CC yes, But for admissions I think pre-med (or biology) is easier.

UCLA avgGPA admitted for engineering is a 3.88. Biology 3.75. If you can do pre-med through a Humanities major such as French it’s only a 3.56. BTW a french major who completed Calc 1 n 2, along with bio and chemistry at CC would be way above the competition.

ah fudge, i hated ap bio… so if i manage to get very good grades at a cc (maybe 1 B MAX) will i be able to get into ucla/ucsd/uci for a CS/EECS major? because im leaning towards computer science in general the most right now

@bomerr‌ or cant i just switch my major after i get into the college? :D

@personstudent, basically and english is a VERY easy class to get a B in if you take the wrong teacher. and no you cannot switch INTO more difficult majors after transfer.

oh man, community college actually sounds kind of scary… i feel like my life can easily get messed up from this (i kind of have big goals right now…)

also, im guessing you know all of this because you’ve been through it? what happened to you? did you end up getting into the hard major you wanted in 2 years? did you end up going to the school you wanted to go to?
