Calling all past/present Davis honors challenge students

please share your experiences…thank you!

I am applying to DHC through early option by april 22nd so I know of my admittance/denial to program before I turn in SIR

1.How hard is it to get in? what is admit rate about?

2.Did u live in the optional Kearney hall your first year? IF so, how was exepreience living in an all honors- community? Did U still enjoy the social aspects of davis? If not, did u feel u missed out by not living in Kearney hall? How was being in DHC but not living in Keareny?

3.Describe the honors seminars/classes? Was it annoying to schedule these additional classes? How difficult were the classes? Were thhe honor classes enriching/ stimulating? Does DHC give the oppurrtunity to do more research?
How does it look on resume?

how was your service learning program if you participated?

How were the perks ( counseling, lab, library privilege, priority enrollment) ?

Additional comments:

Sorry, I am neither, but from what I heard, its quite the waste of time, it's just extra work.

I did Honor Challenge for 1 year, and I took one honors seminar and one honor section class (that goes together with a normal class).

50% acceptance rate when I applied 50/100?. 3.2 GPA cutoff I think?. You can apply during your first year (to become enrolled in the program when you're a sophomore).

No idea, I never lived there.

Classes are boring, easy, the ones I took were not enriching. DHC does not give you opportunity to do more research. It looks good on the resume.

no idea

Library usage was great, got to check out books for entire quarter instead of 2/4 week limit. Counselors like you more (but then again if you have a high GPA they'll like you too). Enrolled before everybody (before seniors). Computer lab in Kerr hall, closes at 5pm but very short line if one at all, compared to the normal computer lab (especially at lunchtime).

conclusion: I didn't learn much, the group activities were a mess, I got two easy As, but the privileges were excellent. Do this: get accepted (apply during the 1st year so you get all the perks as a sophomore), then you can choose not to do any of the classes (and get kicked after 1 year) but you get the perks for that 1 year. Especially useful, if for only that 1 year. =)

I'm in DHC right now and yeah some of the honors classes we have to take are somewhat interesting but they're definitely not what I was expecting; I haven't learned as much as I thought I was going to. And yeah, it is kinda annoying that those classes are taking up a couple units each quarter that I could be using for classes that would help me graduate sooner.

Nonetheless, I plan to continue doing DHC because the benefits are outstanding.

Priority registration - you won't really understand how valuable and wonderful this is until you register for your classes at orientation this summer. Basically, as a freshman, you get last pick of classes and it's unlikely that you'll get the kind of schedule you want. But if you're in DHC you get priority registration and you have first pick of classes, and you can almost guarantee that you can get any class at any time you want. It's pretty amazing.

Kearney - If you choose to live on the DHC floor, you are guaranteed a room in one of the nicest dorms on campus. Considering that there is a broad range of dorms, from really old to really nice, it's great to not have to worry about the chance of getting put somewhere you don't want to be. Kearney is a little bit farther from campus than say, Segundo, but it's totally worth it to be in a nice, new building.

DHC Computer Lab - There have been many times just in the past quarter where I had to print something out like 10 minutes before a class starts. There's this lab at the MU where a lot of people go to print their stuff, and if you go before class there's usually a really long line you have to wait in. If there's ever a line I just walk right over to the DHC lab, which is pretty close, and print for free without waiting in line.

So basically, they could probably make the actual honors classes more valuable somehow, and it is a little annoying to have to work those into your schedule and do all the extra stuff you have to do, but I think the perks that you get for being in DHC are totally worth it.

Does Davis have wireless?

There is not wireless in the dorms. All the other important places on campus do, though, such as the library, the quad, the MU, the dorm common areas, etc. You'll find that some classrooms do and some classrooms don't, but you never really need it in class anyway. See IET : Wireless Network: Map List and IET : Wireless Coverage Maps for more info.

So no internet in dorms? Hello apartment... lol

I said no wireless not no internet. The dorms are wired with high-speed ethernet connections. The internet in the dorms is actually more reliable than it is in many apartment complexes.

Oooh, okay thanks.

Can I just buy a router or something if I want wireless?

Yeah you can install a router in your room but you'd be breaking the contract you have to sign to live in the dorms. Of all the people I know who live in the dorms I can only think of one or two who have a router. It's just not really necessary.

thanks for all the good clarifications
I was just wondering about it last night while reading about the honors program
the classes did not exactly sound "interesting" so I thought why bother, (not to mention I have to write essays to apply =.=)
I was reluctant to get into more honors courses since I've already suffered through high school..(who hasn't?).
but all the special privileges are really fascinating...I'm definitely going to apply now!
