~calling all people with blogging experience~

just for reference, i'm a senior in high school, but i thought i might be able to get some advice from u all.

so, lately i have been toying with the idea of starting up some sort of blogging site-maybe something focused on fashion/makeup trends. i don't have any money to spend on this, as of yet, so i suppose i would use something like wordpress, which i have heard good things about.

butttt, i don't really know how to go about advertising this/finding pictures i could freely use. [if i just use pictures off of the internet, could i possibly get in trouble/be sued? D:]

any advice about any of this would be greatly appreciated [including any naming ideas, lol].

Blogger’s a pretty good service.

As for pictures you can freely use, look for stuff on google like “free stock photos”

Almost all blogs I’ve seen that focus on fashion or makeup feature photos and reviews of different products. I don’t think you’d have any problems using photos from, say, the MAC website.

I’m a blogger :)

I would recommend you to use blogger or wordpress.

I really don’t think you’ll get into trouble, but it’s always better when you use your own photos, or stock images, or images from the companies website.

Just know where the photo came from, and always credit the site or photographer, because you acknowledge that it’s not yours.

…

I knew someone who has tons of followers on her style blog. She was invited to NY Fashion week, and she gets some clothes and stuff from designers.

She has business cards for her blog, with all her contact info. And it doesn’t hurt if you want to set up a twitter account  & I know alot of bloggers list themselves on blog directories :)

hope this helps!

Nooooo! Don’t use blogger or wordpress.

Use Tumblr. I use it.

^haha, i just randomly made a tumblr a few months ago, then forgot about it. is it meant to be a blog? i thought it was more of a facebook type of thing : P

“I knew someone who has tons of followers on her style blog. She was invited to NY Fashion week, and she gets some clothes and stuff from designers.”
GAH, i would die <3 lol.

so, i typed ‘free stock photos’ in to google, without really even knowing what that means. i found a few sites [& signed up on <a href=“Free Photos, Clipart, Vectors, PSD, & Icons | FreeImages”>http://www.sxc.hu/][/url], but…are they just sites that provide pictures that u can use for anything? i don’t get it, lol. or do i give credit to the photographer or website, either way? [just writing a name under each picture…would that suffice?] haha, sorry for all of the questions :]

I’m pretty sure you can use them without providing any credit. Stock photos are just that, stock photos. They’re used by varieties of companies when they want to add some sort of illustration to a website.

Like, ok, some website that’s promoting a great tooth whitening system might get a stock photo of a woman smiling with bright white teeth. They didn’t take it, they don’t know who the hell it is, they just need it and are willing to pay decent money in order to have a good photo. They don’t have to provide any credit.

I assume that these free stock photos are covered under the Creative Commons license or something like that.

It wouldn’t exactly hurt to give credit considering I doubt anyone who is copyright advise is proficient in law.
Play it safe and give credit. It’s only a couple of words per photo.

Take a look at this:
[Flickr: Creative Commons](Flickr: Creative Commons)
[Creative Commons Search](http://search.creativecommons.org/)

Make sure to buy your own domain. Don’t use a subdomain

Blogspot all the way!

some money could help… also use wordpress or tumbler.
tumblr is the best free blogging site imo, but with wordpress you can upgrade to the paid version which is what most of the serious bloggers use.

anyways good luck… it’s pretty tiring imo and you gotta put in a lot of effort before anyone starts to follow you, which is why me and most other bloggers quit before they even get started

Do not use tumblr. Like you said, it’s not really a “real” blog. Yeah they have cute themes, but it’s intended for small posts, photos. Not really that serious, just more personal.

You can use stock photos, and you can use regular photos from google etc. Just credit where you got it from, or photographer if that info is available.

As others have said, it takes a while for you to get a following. Bloggers that have numerous followers didn’t start out that way. I just started seriously blogging (after 2 failed attempts) about 2 months ago, and i barely have anyone following me. Sometimes it may feel as if you’re just talking to yourself, but that’s completely fine. It takes time to create a following :)

I tried wordpress, but I was more at ease with Blogger’s traditional simple interface. Try them out :)

I have a fashion tumblr and I have a lot of followers. If you’re looking to get famous/be invited to fashion weeks/receive free clothes, then I’d recommend blogspot. You can get images from any website, as long as you link the source. Most fashion bloggers that I follow (you probably know all the famous ones) get their pictures from magazine spreads, jakandjil, the satorialist, style.com (if you’re into runway pictures), etc. There are tumblrs that follow certain celebrities (like the Olsens/other models) and those pictures can serve as fashion inspiration as well. Most fashion bloggers that are currently famous, however, post pictures of themselves. You’ll need a fashionable wardrobe, a decent quality camera, and a photographer. It takes a lot of effort to maintain a blog, though, so be prepared. If you want websites for reference you can msg me… I know a lot about this subject. I’ve been blogging forever and I surf fashion blogs religiously.

Ps: If you just want a place to have an archive of fashion inspiration, use tumblr. If you want to be followed by many people and become a fashion icon, use blogspot. Tumblr has followers, too, but in a difference dynamic… most people just reblog pretty pictures. I wouldn’t recommend wordpress because it goes down very often. Also, get an account at chictopia.com and start posting pictures. Link your blog in your picture descriptions to bring more traffic to your site.

To gain a following, you’ve got to make insightful comments on other blogs in your blogosphere, and leave the link (usually a place to do this) to your blog along with the comment.

I started a new blog on human biodiversity two weeks ago, and surprisingly, I’ve gained quite a following. I actually found myself on the blogroll of some very prominent bloggers. My previous two blogs were failures, because all I did was write about everyday life and other boring issues.

You have to provide a unique point of view on interesting topics if your blog is to gain any traction.
