hey anyone know about Southwestern University?? Its location, academics, people, etc? All i know is its near Austin...dont know much about Georgetown tho, im scared its too small or boring? also is it a "brainy" school cuz thats the impression I get from it.

Let's see. My friend's sister goes to SWU, and she loves it. She was one of the top kids in her high school class, so yeah it's kind of brainy. If you are doing pre-professional stuff they have business, dentistry, education, engineering, law, medicine. Um good weather, rivers lakes and parks. About 22% minority.

SAT mid-range: 1160-1330

Acceptance rate: 63%

99% faculty with terminal degree or doctorate

awesome fitness center, observatory, 50% study abroad in england, germany, honduras, jamaica, mexico, and spain and turkey.

If you haven't guessed its a liberal arts college. It's in georgetown - about 20 miles north of austin.
ranked 4th best academic "bang for your buck" in nation by princeton review
tuition is about 19000. room and board is about 6000-7000.

Lots of kids from my high school go there

It's a really good school, my friends parents both teach there. hikkifan was right about everything, be ready to work your butt off if you go there. If you're a slacker who likes to party a lot (me), theres other schools in Texas for you

Great school, but small. BUT-it's near Austin which is the greatest place in the world. Kids who go to Southwestern love it.

I graduated from Southwestern many years ago, when it was much farther from Austin than it is now. Georgetown is a nice small town, and Austin is wonderful, thankfully close. Most of the dorms are new or renovated within the past 10 years. Great academics, great reputation. I believe the sciences (premed) and communications are the most popular majors now. Good facilities, easy campus to get around, friendly students.

do you get the "college experience" at Southwestern? If you cant tell already, the size really worries me. i come from a small high school like 2500 kids, SMALL suburban town (home of st marys college), and although I could never handle a school as large as UT-Austin or Cal Berkeley, I dont want a school thats so small, I get bored. know what i mean? i need a balance of quiet surburbanness and party scene

my friends who goes to southwestern says you do.

why not escape texas though...and freeze yourself in the north?

i like sunshine, im sick of the rain and cold in the bay area!

2500 kids? That's small? That's more than 3x the size of my high school. If you want a small school but with plenty of stuff to do, why not Rice University? It's tiny and has a very nice campus with lots of greenery... but is also in the Museum District of Houston... and is less than a mile from the Zoo.

lol believe me, if i could get into Rice, id go in a heartbeat.

Well, I've heard good things about Austin College as well. Austin may not be as big as Houston, but it's nice and it's got plenty of stuff to do. This being said, I think Southwestern is a very good school.

The only part of the "college experience" you don't get at Southwestern is college football. They haven't had a football team since the early 50s.

How does Southwestern compare with Trinity University. Which would you choose

I don't know too much about Trinity, except that they have a strong soccer program. It is in San Antonio, which is a fun place, but I like Austin better.
As far as Austin College, it has strong academics but Sherman is pretty far from civilization.

Trinity is bigger and probably not as good academically. It boils down to Austin vs. San Antonio......tough choice. i think Trinity has a better party atmosphere

Austin College is a great school, with a better acceptance rate for medical school than Rice. Sherman is a crappy town, but theres a lot to do on campus

That's highly doubtful. What is your source?

an article i read a long time ago, sorry don't remember which one

Rice is a much better school, but it is very very difficult to get through Austin College's pre med program. also, they probably have less people going through it than Rice. the stat might be misleading, but it shows what a good school Austin College is
