CALS Questions...please I need help

Hello all....

I recently contacted someone who is a retired college counselor or something of the sort, she will be helping me strengthen my application. I mentioned that I would like to try and apply to CALS, and submitted my transcript, scores, etc. to her. She sent back a few points that I had not believed to be true for this particular college....could anybody please clarify?? I have done so much research and now this is throwing me for a loop and I'm sort of freaking out.

-Cornell requires 2-3 SAT 2's (I thought the ag school didn't?)
-typical students who get in are ranked in the top 5 of their class (actual top 5 students, not 5%)
-ACT scores are generally 34-35 (the recently released suny sheet said that CALS had a 50th percentile of 28-32?)
-4-6 AP classes were taken junior/senior year, per year (honestly I don't even think this is an option for my school...surely there are people who get in without 12 AP's?)

I also thought that fit and experience played a huge role in this college's decisions, which I really do have an exceptional amount of, yet she didn't touch on it at all. Is this true?

Thank you for any information you may be able to give me!!!

I would avoid this so-called counselor since everything she has told you is incorrect. In fact, your information is correct. CALS does not require SATII’s, most students are in the top 5-10%, your ACT info is correct, and the number of AP courses is not as relevant as whether you took the most challenging curriculum at your school. For some students, that may mean few or no AP’s. You want to show that you challenged yourself to the extent possible.

Oh - and yes, fit and experience are very important to Cornell, and you want to make sure your essays really address these points.

I am amazed that someone would be offering such obviously incorrect advice.

@purpleroan‌ - I agree with everything blprof said above.

Where did you get that CALS ACT info/is there a link or something you can show me? I’ve been looking for CALS specific statistics and am not sure where to find anything.

The ACT was from the SUNY data sheet released from the 2014 incoming class. I also have another page I believe; I’ll definitely post links for you when I can get home and on a computer! @Ranza123‌

I apologize @Ranza123 for tagging you, your other post was on my mind!!

@hopefulrm I obtained my ACT information from https://www.suny.edu/media/suny/content-assets/documents/summary-sheets/Admissions_qf_stateop.pdf</a>

That’s alright!

To respond to this post, I agree with the above that all the information this lady gave you is incorrect. CALS does not require SAT IIs, the average ACT score is not that high, and the ranking and number of APs depends entirely on the high school the student attended (my school only offered 2 APs, but it was relatively easy to be at the top of the class).
