I started this thread for people who are interested, currently attend, or were just admitted to the CALS school at Cornell. Just curious what drew you to CALS and what you know about the program? S was admitted, but would be a hardship for us to afford with the relatively little financial aid. Also offered spring admission so there are concerns there. I guess we are trying to figure out if it worth it.
Hi! I was just accepted to CALS too! I love how global CALS is and its strong food science program. I also really like how there are so many cool fields to explore at Cornell. The diversity and beauty of the campus and the research opportunities are super exciting as well. However, I’m out of state, so I’m a VERY worried about tution. Yikes! IDK what i’ll get…
I have heard good things about the food science program. @kaleseed, you didn’t receive financial aid yet?
I still have to file my forms… Apparently I’m missing a few
@Kaleseed, oh that makes sense. Are you in NY or OOS?
OOS
I was VERY surprised I got in b/c OOS is so competitive. Now, I’m worried about financial aid
S is also out of state and was very happy to be admitted and surprised too. S admitted for spring though.
The classes sound amazing. I hope we can make this work. Could go either way at this point.
Good luck! My sister got into Harvey Mudd, and I got into Cornell, so my parents are trying to figure it out.
Very happy to say I was admitted to CALS for Ag sciences. Currently debating between Bates and Cornell. Cornell just notified me on Friday to say I was missing financial aid documents though. What a pain, I wish they could’ve reached out earlier…
Same @realperson2990 I got into CALS and need my financial aid in! OMG did you see the Ithaca farmers market site? I am SO excited! I literally started crying when I found out (:
My parents want me to look at Berkeley as well still.
My daughter got into Cornell CALS a couple of years ago, but for financial reasons, she wound up attending University of Minnesota with nearly a full ride. She is only a sophomore and has been working in two labs since her freshman year, including working on her own research project in one of the labs, and working full-time last summer. These are paid positions directly related to her major. She loves her department and all the opportunities available there. She is also in the honors program. Of course there is always the “what if” she had been able to afford Cornell, would it have made a difference, but I seriously doubt it. There are many strong ag programs at the land grant universities around the country, and they produce a lot of the published research. Financial realities are what they are. Her high school classmate a year ahead of her also was accepted to Cornell, and wound up taking a full ride at another state university for the same reason. It’s really what you can afford or are willing to pay for Cornell versus the alternatives available.
Thanks @mommyrocks ! My state school doesn’t offer agri sciences ):
@KaleSeed what farmers market are you referring to ?
The Ithaca Farmers’ Market

@KaleSeed Every state has a land grant university that should have an ag department. Here’s a map: https://nifa.usda.gov/sites/default/files/resource/lgu_map_1862_6_25_2014_1.pdf Since apparently you didn’t apply to one of these, or maybe your land grant university is an exception (or you live in New York, and Cornell is it), I hope you are able to afford Cornell. It will be amazing!
Oh! Thans @mommyrocks I had no idea WSU was my land grant university! I hope so too (:
S was accepted for spring 2018. Anyone else? If so, what are you thinking, yes or no?
