Hey, incoming Cal freshman here. I submitted my SIR a few days ago and have a question about CalSO. When I logged in to sign up for CalSO, the following appeared on my page.

Congratulations! You have been nominated to participate in the Coalition for Excellence and Diversity in Mathematics, Science, and Engineering because of your interest in these areas. You should try to attend one of the Coalition orientations listed below where you can find out more about the programs and services available to you as a Coalition Scholar.

Coalition Programs
June 27-June 28, MTu
July 1-July 2, FSa
July 8-July 9, FSa

Non Coalition Programs
June 3-June 4, FSa
June 6-June 7, MTu
June 10-June 11, FSa
June 13-June 14, MTu
June 17-June 18, FSa
June 24-June 25, FSa

As you can see, the dates for the Coalition program fall after the Non Coalition program dates. I'm interested in learning more about the Coalition program (Biology Scholars Program) but at the risk (is there a risk?) of not getting into the classes I'm interested in, specifically Chem 1A and Math 16A, I'm not entirely sure I want to go to a CalSO date so far into the month. When do these classes tend to fill up by? Do you think I should go to the Coalition CalSO on June 27, or just sign up for the earliest Non Coalition CalSO date on June 3?

Wow. I had the EXACT same question you had a couple days ago…and I’m going to take the EXACT same classes are you…LOL. You’re an IB major, huh.

Well, I called them, and they consequently never answered for a few days…so I just went and registered for the earliest CalSO day, regardless of the Coalition CalSO, cause I wanted priority registration.

You should maybe call them for more specific details, but I doubt that you’d have priority class registration if you wait till those Coalition dates.

qwanie - YEAH, I AM haha. I actually did call in but received a semi-vague response (sigh). I heard Chem 1A spots fill up pretty quickly even near the end of May so I’m really leaning towards just a regular CalSO date.

does taking summer school courses at berkeley give you an advantage(priority) when signing up for classes next fall?
the thing is that i didnt know that we sign up for classes on CalSo day,…so i signed up for the coalition dates…which is like way later…and i was wondering, is there anyways how i can change the dates?

LostPuppy1993 … I heard you can trade dates with somebody. It has to be done manually (via phone) and he/she had to have been a nominee for the Coalition program.

is there an advantage to attending the coalition scholars orientation? it’s at a much later date than the regular orientations, which probably means that i will not be able to register for classes as early. can i still be considered as a coalition scholar if i don’t attend the orientation?
