CalSO Impressions Thread

CalSO is almost here for the first group of students. I won't be going until a week from today, but I'm really curious as to what people think of CalSO. So, I figured I'd get a jump start on that by creating this impressions thread. Please post your impressions of CalSO here after you get done with it.

If anyone can find this out (or already knows) . . . I'd like to bring my laptop and do my net surfing in my "free" time. I think the units are wireless, but will you need a PW or can you get set up even if you're not yet a student? Thanks.

Where available, AirBears does provide wireless access. You will definitely have to log in, however; if you don't have a verified CalNet ID, you are going to have to try and use Guest Access, and I have no idea how that works (it's an option when the virtual network log-in screen appears once you open your web browser).

I have a Calnet id no but don't know what you mean by verified. What website are you looking at?

Good topic... I'll be at Calso for June 18-19th.

You'll need a passphrase for AirBears and Rescomp (the internet in the dorms). If you don't have a passphrase for your ID then you can't use it.

So...how was it? :)

It was pretty cool. Try to hit up a frat party, especially since summer session will have already started during your CALSO. Definitely made some new friends, stayed up until 5 AM doing all sorts of interesting things.

Beds suck, and they only give you 1 pillow. So bring another one. Get some comfortable walking shoes.

Overall, the majority of the fun was had after all the random CALSO activities were over. Try to meet as many people as you can during the actual CALSO - this will come in handy.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to post.

how much free time did u have to go to frat parties and other things. do you really have to be up around 7-8 in the morning?

What were the best and worst parts? What did you stay up to 5 a.m. doing, and how were you able to stay up so late without bugging the RA (Did you stay in the Unit 3 dorm?)? Oh yeah, how's the dorm, and do you room with another CalSO student?

@ccbound

If you don't ditch anything the first day (although most of it was pointless), you have 9 pm - however late you want to stay up. After 9 PM, you can watch a movie, or play some board games - if you want to stick to their plan.

@Azure326

I'll let you use your imagination for what I was doing. There was no RA in site and I stayed in the Unit 3 dorm.

I'm guessing you didn't go up with a parent. . . !

Speaking of which, what do the parents do? Are you separated the whole time?

you sleep in the dorms if you pay that extra fee on top of the standard $190, correct?

Beatchick, parents are separated and sleep in different rooms than students

FYI, I don't do any kind of drugs (including weed or alcohol). In case you guys were getting the wrong impression here.

Judging from your guys' posts, I think I may have overhyped this a little bit. You won't be missing much if you decide to get some sleep instead.

However, if you do ** ALWAYS, ALWAYS walk in a group with 4 people or more. If you want to leave a party or something of the like, get people to go with you. The city is a sh1tehole, and it's an even bigger one at night. **

so do we sleep in dorms as part of the program? lol

yes you do

urd0rkk - I never had to pay anything extra (I also only paid $100 instead of $190), and I believe I'm going to stay in the dorms.

Im jw, if the professors dont show up on the online course catalogue, does that mean the other professors are unavailable? i.e. chem 1a shows only 1 instructor. where are all the others?

I believe only one professor is offered for Chem 1A fall.
