No, there are three different profs and sections for Chem 1A

for the fall? How come they dont appear on the course catalogue online?

Azure 236 - I think und0rkk is referring to the early accommodations for those who come the night before.

So, what did others think of it? How was the lunch/dinner, and what about the "night-time activities"? By isthatcatfish's post, it seems that the activities are only board games (which ones?) and a movie (anything worthwhile?).

What were your impressions of the other CalSO students? Were they all friendly and willing to talk (I'm guessing you meet everybody at lunch/dinner?)?

Generally, every CalSO student I talked to was friendly.

As far as the activities, I saw cards, and some big group game where everyone sat in a circle. Another room had the movie, which had a whopping 4 people.

Ha, wow, only 4 people? Was it Gigli or something?

The city is not a ****hole at all. I was a freshman last semester and I walked alone around. Maybe walk with a friend if you are uncomfortable, but there are always students walking around during the year. It's not bad.. USC is bad.

If you've grown in middle/high class suburbia (like I assume the majority of the people on this forum), you will think it's a ****hole.

Plus, I saw my fair share of drug addicts, drunks, and belligerent homeless people.

I think movie was Shrek 2.

isthatcatfish - Did you all decide what courses you were going to take and enroll for them while you were up there?

I'm heading up the 28th-29th, exactly one day after getting back from vacation from europe! I'm going to be so jetlagged, but it should be fun still.

People aren't out to hurt you. Drunk people wont attack you, homeless are harmless.. If you see people get shot, then start talking about being dangerous. I live in the Lamorinda area comprised of Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda (rich town). It may look like a ****hole in Berkeley, but it's not like its that unsafe. If you are scared, call bear walk. They are there for people like you who may not want to walk alone.

Haha, I'm from Orinda.

Will I see real life crack addicts? Word to Tyrone Biggums.

You probably will. My friend saw a guy doing lines of coke.

Any more impressions? How was the rest of the day, and how was the lunch/dinner? Where do we check-in? There's almost 20 different things planned for CalSO, and we've only heard back a little about the late-night activities and a just a few general tips about walking around campus.

Any other impressions? How's the showering situation? Where do you change to get out of your clothes to shower and where do you change back into new clothes? Is there room to do it in the shower stall (I guess there'd have to be some sort of rack/hanger in the stall for you to put your towel and clothes?)?

rofl, I want to see what you look like. Link to MySpace?

I went June 4/5...just fyi.
The stuff about scheduling classes got a tad redundant, especially if you'd already done all the "Academic Orienteering" thing. You'll also might want to change your classes after hearing stuff, but you won't have access to a computer until the next, but you have plenty of time to look at the schedule of classes and such then. They'll be selling general catalogs ($5), and I'd suggest buying one and having it with you, because you'll probably want to look at it during the advising session.
The late night activities were: Caf

isthatcatfish - Me? I don't have a MySpace, and I'm not into that whole MySpace thing (not everyone is into the whole MySpace craze, so I'm not sure why you just assumed that I had a MySpace account). I do have a Facebook (Similar to MySpace, yes, but I find the people are much more mature and show some sign of intelligence in their messages; omgz liek wut r u going 2 do on sAtudray lol rofl!!!11!!!one) account though (no, I won't give it to you).

azelma - Thanks, that was very helpful.

REVIEW June 7 Transfer CalSO

Quick Review: Pointless. Only things useful was to get early registration for Phase I, free food, and to meet people in your majors. The information they provided was redundant, especially if you frequent College Confidential a lot.

Location: It is at Unit 3 dorms!!! Walking to the place we met a lot of people who were lost and was standing at Sproul Hall. Go to Unit 3!!! Sign in is around the right side to the back.

Schedule

Breakfast: horrible, no meat, no eggs. they had cereal, milk, orange juice, coffee, bagels, oatmeal, and fresh fruit.

Welcoming Speech: Funny Professor welcomed us, but didn't really talk about much, especially since we were running late.

Small Group Ice Breaker: We broke up into small groups according to our majors, about 10 people, and went to somewhere on campus. We played an ice breaker.

Major Group: We then met up with everyone who was in our major. Mine was business admin. We went to a room in Haas and introduced ourselves, learned about some of the stuff on campus, and could get our questions answered. Still pretty useless since they just said stuff like, "get involved, have fun, etc. etc" All stuff we already know about.

Lunch: We headed to lunch. Choice of Turkey Sandwich or Turkey Salad, fruit, cookie, chips, and a soda.

Option 1 and 2: We were allowed to choose two categories we were interested in learning more about. Things like "Financial Aid, Housing," etc. etc. I can't remember, there were about 7 or 9 choices. These are general information workshops, and you do not actually get to visit the actual office for 1 on 1. (its worth noting i might be incorrect on some parts here, as I skipped it, more on that later)

Ending Ceremony: Went back to a big hall. 2 previous transfer students gave speeches about their first year. blah blah. (I skipped half of it).

Registration: We finally get to register at the end with our counselor. When we say counselor, it is not an actual staffed counselor, but a student counselor (or so I assumed, I never asked for help). We went into a computer room and were allowed to register. You could ask for help by calling someone over.

Dinner: Finally some meat! Pizza, orange chicken, teriyaki chicken, soda, orange juice, and more.

How Me And My Friends Used Cal SO

Up to about lunch we stuck with the program. But 5 of us total (all Business Transfer students) decided it was useless to keep staying with the program, so we went off on our own.

First stop was Cal1 card office, got my cal card.

Then we went to Sproul Hall, we got 1 on 1 counseling in Financial Aid and Work Study. Had our questions answered. There are four computers in the Hall we used to catch up on registration info and stuff.

We headed off to Career Center to receive advising on, well, our future careers.

There was free wi-fi in the office, and since we just received advising, we opened up our laptops and registered for our classes using the Advisor Code we were given (we aren't suppose to add classes for Fall Quarter until the end of CalSO, so we got to add about 3 hours early).

Went to Transportation Office next to Career Center and got some forms for parking permits.

Back to join up with CalSO, made it for the speeches from current Transfer students, then went to register with everyone else, but since we had our classes, it was real quick, we just double checked everything and left.

Final Comments

I would still pay the $100 all over again to receive early registration, esp. since mind was the first CalSO. But if it wasn't for going off on our own, the day would've been pretty useless.

Kubinec, Pines, and someone else? I think the three sections have 2-3 professors alternate lecturing if I'm not mistaken.
