Caltech 2015 RD hopeful

Good luck to all...I'm guessing that many of u apply to MIT as well.

I got deferred at MIT and Caltech, so I guess that makes me an RD hopeful too!

Caltech releases its decisions the earliest out of all the schools I applied to. Looking forward to March 12…

Caltech is my 2nd choice, behind MIT :).

does anyone want to read my supplement essay and comment and feedback?

Also, an MIT deferree!

While I think its a tossup between MIT and Caltech if I had to make a choice, I want to make that decision and not be forced into Caltech even though I’m sure I would love it!

I applied to both Caltech and MIT two years ago, and got into both. It was an agonizing decision, but I ultimately chose Caltech, and am VERY glad I did. Sure, MIT is a great school with a great reputation, but Caltech is really special. It has amazing collaboration between students, and between students and staff. It is supportive and gives you lots of small classes and attention, while what I hear of MIT is that it is much more cutthroat and has fierce competition. Yes, you can push yourself through competition with your fellow classmates, but you also learn through cooperation and collaboration with your fellow classmates. The living environment (everyone on campus in one of the houses) is unique and wonderfully supportive at Caltech. At MIT, many people live off campus or in frats, though on campus dorms are an option. The houses at Caltech create such cammaraderie that you will never find elsewhere.

^ I thought Caltech’s the tougher place…

How do you define tough? Yes, Caltech is hard, with emphasis on core theory of physics and math. But that core is taken by all students, and you work together on most all problem sets and learn to work them out together. It is the learning atmosphere that makes all the difference. My understanding is that MIT has it’s emphasis on application and Caltech has it’s emphasis on theory, but obviously they overlap a lot in both approaches. To me, the choice came down to large, more anonymous school vs smaller, more personal school. The student body at both have similar profiles.
